OK guys... here's a twist. I have a 2005 997S and Porsche just replaced the engine due to a cracked clyinder liner. The NEW engine number is: M97/01AT68666694. Any idea what the "AT" signifies?

ouch - sorry to here about your engine. If I might ask, how many miles were on it when you had the failure?

Did they give you a reason why they believe it happened?

38,000 miles.

No reason given by Porsche, but forum research indicates lack of coolant to the right rear bank.

"AT" is abbreviation for Austauch which means "exchange" from what I understand.

Ah... that makes total sense. "Austauch" does indeed mean "Exchange" (online translater). The rest of the numbers would then likely designate the rebuilt core.

I added the 3rd radiator and replaced my WP as a preventative measure to help address potential cooling issues.

"To determine if your M97 engine has the improved IMS, you will need to check your engine number.
if the engine number is 68509790 and below, unfortunately it still has the smaller removable IMS bearing.
if the engine number is 68509791 and above, it will have the new large single row IMS. The IMS cover also has the 22mm nut.";
Anybody know the the numbers for the M96 engine?
I have a 3.6l engine in my 997 from march 2005
Engine number 69508109
Do I have the improved ims???

Yes, from the workshop manual the 3.6l engine from M96/05 69507476 has the larger improved IMS.

Default VIN # IMS Type Test

I would assume that as part of the IMS Lawsuit Settlement that Porsche had to disclose which vehicles were built with the smaller, replaceable IMS bearing. This VIN # checker will tell you if your car is part of the IMS Settlement and therefore, whether it has a version of the smaller bearing or the larger, non-serviceable bearing.

http://www.imsporschesettlement.com/porsche-vin/

If you have an '05 or '06 vehicle and entering the VIN # in the box reveals you don't have a class vehicle and if you combine this VIN search with the engine # search from this thread and both say you're OK, then really, you're probably OK. Although neither test by itself is may be 100% accurate, combining the 2 should give you that much more peace of mind. If you ever replace the clutch, where you have to pull the transmisison, that would be the time to check for sure and have 100% validation that you're OK.

You're MY06 and build date > 03/05. You should have the larger bearings.

FWIW, here's another data point (I have no idea whether it has the small or large bearing):

2005 997 C2S
Engine code M97/0168510197
Build date: 3/05

FWIW, another datapoint.

2006 997 Cab C2S
Engine M97/01 68615274
Build data 02/06

Presume it has the large single IMS, the last variant before it was eliminated?
