My 2012 997S
I haven't had much time for contributing to this excellent forum for the past few years (not much time for anything save for work, really!!...); my career made me move from Europe to South America and travel way more than I cared for.
Now based in Santiago - Chile, I finally had the chance to bring a 911 home again. Started by purchasing an nicely spec'd '09 997S with PDK from the local Porsche dealer last November; official Porsche warranty, 20k Km's, 1 previous owner.
I've never owned a 911 with anything other than a manual transmission, so when I first went to test drive the car, my skepticism about owning an auto transmission 911 - even a PDK - was very high.
The PDK with the Sports Chrono option turned out to be a pleasant surprise; enough to make me break my life-long habit of manual sports cars, and a couple of days after the test drive, my "new-to-me" '09 997S Mk2 was in my garage at home.
It turned out to be a short ownership... a week later, I was back at the dealer to get some floor mats fitted and to re-install the windshield (the former owner had the windshield replaced after road-debris cracked the original one, and the recently replaced unit was making a significant amount of aerodynamic noise from the bottom seal...). As I walked into the new-car showroom while waiting for my car to be checked-in to the service dept., I saw a brand-new 997S, and just out of curiosity got in it, to check out the interior specs Vs. mine. That NEW Car smell made a SIGNIFICANT "dent" in my brain... Again, out of curiosity, I asked the sales rep if they had a black one in stock (mine was a beautiful Atlas Gray, but my heart's always been with black 911's). "Yes" was the reply. Fully spec'd with the options I'd want from the factory (save for the sport exhaust).
I saw "trouble" coming :-) ..... then came the "killer" argument; Prices were being slashed to move the existing stock of 997's and make way for the 991 sales coming this way soon. This made the "delta" between what I'd paid for mine and a new one, significantly less than what I'd originally envisioned.
A few emails back and forth (I'd bought the '09 997S from the same folks, after all...) and a couple of days later, in I drove with my "old" '09 997S, out I drove with my new 2012 997S.
The thought of holding on to the release of the new 991 certainly crossed my mind more than a few times. The cost-difference factor definitely weighed in my decision to go for one of the "last 997s", but equally important was the impression I had (and still have) that the 997MK2 is just a little nearer to being what I'm used to considering a "nineeleven" than the 991. And by no means am I under-estimating the 991; I'm certain it is technically a superior car to the 997 in every respect. But for me, today, the last and most refined and tested version of the 997S is the "nineeleven" I want in my garage.
Brand new baby waiting to be driven home...

side-by-side with the "old" (!!) '09 997S it just replaced, as I drove it our of the showroom. I welcomed the addition of the 3rd radiator on this new one; a detail I only learned when I lined the cars up next to each other and asked the dealer!

Now add the PSE and replace the center (3rd) muffler with the Sharkwerks by pass pipes and listen to the beautiful sound of the flat-6 engine.

I like the sound of the PSE but since I don't mind having it "on" all the time, I took the car back to the dealer a scant 3 days after picking it up, and had the chief mechanic at the local Porsche center perform a "PSEctomy"
using the stock exhaust. My next step is precisely to order a Sharkwerks bypass pipe to delete the 3rd muffler; which I sort of compare to that 3rd little wheel we used to have on bycicles in our infancy !!Cheers,
btw; fabulous RS 4.0 !
