Default Car Driver comparo: Z06 vs. GT-R vs. 991S

Guess who wins? Hint: It's not the Chevy or the Nissan.

Who won is subjective (but nice.) More interesting was the size of the cars; all three were relatively large.

Yup, Just read the article.

Definitely subjective, and I dare say a bit goofy when they consider trunk space and rear seat space as part of the ranking.

I'm predicting a boat load of letters next month complaining about the results... pointing to the performance results of the "big" horsepowered Vette & GT-R.

They'll probably need a fork lift to pick up the bag. The shockwave from Bowling Green has already registered in Cincinnati.

I've sold my Vette and I'm awaiting the new 911. But that price tag is mighty steep and those options are ridiculously expensive! This will have to be my one and only 911.....it'll be a keeper!

I disagree with the author's comment: "It has none of that spooky steering slackness under acceleration, when load transfers off the already lightly burdened front tires." My 997.2 with sport pasm suspension doesn't do this. In fact, it feels like it tucks forward under hard acceleration and it feels amazing. (I don't know how they do this, or if non sport Pasm cars do this either). Yes, my old '01 996 with US worn out suspension after 118k miles, did the front end lift, but read many times here that the M030 sport suspension would have cured this.

I'm sure tighter suspension reduces it, but on-power understeer is one of the characteristic rear-engine traits of 911 dynamics. The author is just trying to say that the car is less 911-y , which most of the American press takes as a positive thing.

So, was anyone surprised at this?

It's a car mag.... just look at the pictures. Don't expect the words to be useful. Trust me, in two or 3 yrs they will review it when some other company comes up with a new car and tell us how much they don't like about the 991

It gets old reading the same dreary shyte...

It was very subjective and the author had a pre conceived opinion. The Nissan was the best performer and the 911 won because "it's more fun to drive". That's where it got the extra points to win. Actually both the chevy and the Nissan were better value if performance counts for anything. The 911 wasn't in the same class. It was 100 hp light. Give me a break!!!

I rather drive my PS3 controller, sounds like driving any of those cars is the same experience.

Nope, he had a "pre-paid" opinion. Don't believe anything you read. It's all Bull

Remember when the GT-R came out and it was nearly unbeatable for it's performance and price tag? Well, fast forward a few years when the GT-R is old news and the current flavor of the day is the 991. The mags want to push readership by annointing the 911 as "the best" because we all want to read about the new model right now.

In a year or two, the new Audi R-8 will be out or a new 'vette Z-06 will be introduced and will wax the 991 in that shoot out just like it's been for decades.

Car & Driver is still my favorite general car rag, but they too are starting to get soft around the middle.

I'd have to agree with Chago on this one. The 997.2 already got rid of that trait when you drive it seriously. Of course, they've managed to retain it for... tourists I guess we'd call them. If you just try harder in corners without knowing what the car likes, it will understeer almost as if it's saying "this is how I keep touring drivers out of the bushes."

Porsche actually gave that design goal a name: 'splay', meaning the car behaves one way when you're in over your head and another way when trained drivers get behind the wheel. I still haven't decided how I feel about that, though the advantages are obvious when you sell to litigious markets. I kinda liked the idea of cars that were better than I was when I was young. That's why I kept trying to learn more about the art of fast driving. Porsches that demanded that skill to find their best and live to talk about it still appeal to me. I may yet buy a seventies 911S for the grins.

I do wish they'd made the existence of that 'splay' a little more evident. Even just a footnote in the manual. Would have saved me two track days of experimenting. No wait, I like track days.

Reset.

Gary, an early 70's S would be about the top of the heap

0-60 in, "who cares" is very chic...
