GTS Named Best 997
#16
I was fortunate enough to have been able to purchase a new car from the entire 2012 911 range, Turbo S and GT3RS included, and I bought a SPASM equipped GTS. It was the best car for me, offering performance and practicality in pretty perfect harmony (see how many Ps for Porsche I just managed )
So, for me, the article chimes perfectly.

I wouldn't say the GT2RS or Turbo S is the best or better. Are they both awesome machines? Obviously. Are they faster in a straight line? Duh. But faster doesn't always equal best or even better.
Turbos have their drawbacks. The track orientated Carreras and uber barnstormers are more narrowly focused on a their specific purpose.
The 997GTS has risen to the the top as the epitomey of what a 911 of the 997 generation was supposed to be as a daily sports car for The enthusiast all in a package priced right. It will run with the GT3s on the track on track day and get you home and to the city that night for dinner in comfort. Interestingly they were not produced in great numbers. Go figure.
I have had quite a few 911s going back to the first year 996 through many 997s. I've had them in all variants e.g. Targas, C4Ss C2Ss etc. This GTS is a stand out. Hands down. I am very glad I made the the decision to get one.
GT Porsche is dead on correct.

Value is front and center in the "best" designation.
Consumer reports lists "best buys" that I'd never consider.
I have driven the GTS and for a long road trip, it is clearly a great ride.
My bet the Turbo and Turbo S fall out of favor due to price of purchase and overal cost to drive.

i drove GTS car and really liked how motor pulls, plus for the money it costs whenyou get a model with SPASM and LSD you get a lot of stuff for the price of a car...
so as of how far street cars go GTS is a very versatile machine, if that is a definition for 'best' - then it is a best. in my ranking best porsche is any current RSR car, then cup car.
in all honesty i kinda grew tired of driving my 997 on public roadfs, it is fun for a week or so, then you just get bored as there is nothing you can do with it on a street that this car isreally intended for and there are plenty of other cars on the market that can press your back hard into the seat and not make all your bones rattle at each pothole.

The GTS is the best Carrera as intended for primarily for public roads as a DD with occassional sport work on track day hands down. It as noted above is truly most versitile of all the Carreras. It is probably the best bang for the buck.
For track orientated cars or uber high speed autobahn stormers obviously there are more focused Carreras for that task and there is a "best" Carrera in those categories too.. my vote GT3RS 4.0 and GT2RS respectively at more then twice the price of the GTS.

Compare the overall reliability of Porsche to other high end or exotic cars, Porsches are very comfortable as a DD or commuter. The Turbo is an exotic to be sure. Drive it to work every day, a Lambo or Ferrari, not so much.
Maybe it's me, a GT3 would get old as a DD, just too stiff, too easy to get a $600 ticket! If you never had the opportunity to track a GT3, sort of a waste. The GTS is a super variant of a super version of the 911.
