Default Battery Removal For Winter ?

Hello all, recently placed the car in storage without hydro for the Winter. Outside storage safe and secure.

If I remove the battery and re-install in Spring will it cause me problems with any electronics .

Cheers,

Neil

That's really hard to say. I think the majority would suggest a robust trickle charger instead.

Since these cars are shipped across the pond with the battery installed but not hooked up they should be able to handle that during a winter.

i am planning to take the battery out and keep it charge at home as my storage place has no power outlet for tender.
Talked to a few people including dealership and was told it should be fine and shouldn't have any issues. only time will tell...

I remove the battery in my 2008 997 each winter. No issues in the spring. Read the owners manual as it describes what to do when you reinstall the battery re: warning messages and resetting the end position of the power windows. .

I would defer to Edgy but can tell you that our 2007 997.1 coupe did not fare very well without a battery on trickle charge over the winter months. On the reinstall of the battery this spring it fired up just fine, then dropped to 2 or 3 cylinders, belched out plumes of white smoke and just about every warning lamp and code was flashed across the various dials and screens. My frantic call to the Sr. Tech at the local Porsche Dealer brought calm, but also a stern warning. NEVER, NEVER remove the battery - period. He added that beginning with the 997.1 the various computers and such require full time battery power. He advised a proceedure that would permit me to 'limp' to the shop for a reflash of the various computers/systems. A few hours later all was again well and my heart stopped racing. With our 2009 997.2 Cab we left the battery in place and secured a battery charger recommended here on Rennlist. Best of luck, lennyg

A recent Excellence article warned of removing the battery in 997 cars. The newer the car the more potential for problems when replacing the battery.

Thanks for all the responses guys, back to square one again !
My cars pretty loaded with options, so for now I'll have to continue to think it out .

Q. Can you charge the battery while its still connected to the car, if so I should be able to charge the battery for 6 hrs every other week or so, as this should keep it topped up ?

Cheers

Neil

CTEK is the brand name of the favored charger that most seem to use in down times. Lots of folks keep this charger hooked up at all times when their car is dormant, even overnight. I have the CTEK brand, but (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong...) I think that Porsche's charger is a CTEK (the newer one, not the old, cigarette lighter one). These can be left on the battery indefinitely, and have a variety of hook up options. Google search CTEK for details on the unit and I bet a search on this forum will turn up a bunch, too.

Thanks McCulla, I purchased a "Porsche" trickle charger when I originally purchased the car.
But I have no where to plug it in where the vehicle is stored........bummer !

Thinking out loud (I had a similar situation in Nebraska in the early '90's storing my 964)--I was able to convince the storage site owner to let me run a plug to a light socket above my unit for an extra $10-$15/month...just a thought. Good Luck!

CTEK needs to develop a solor powered battery maintainer.
