997 GTS or 991?

In a word. Wait.
At this point I would at least get a look at the 991. GTS prices should fall in the meantime.

991
From what we are hearing, the performance of the 991S is on par with that of the 997 GT3 and Turbo cars.
If I were to buy a GTS right now, i'd be so pissed in 6 months from now that I didn't wait. I

If you're going to opt for the 991 (which in your situation would be an excellent choice), wait for the second model year, the 2013. It will have all the minor problems of the 2012 (whatever they turn out to be) straightened out.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago, ultimately I opted for the GTS, I figured the GTS is the best of the 997 and should be completed sorted out of any issues. The 991 will have first year issues and I don't really want to be the guinea pig.
The best scenario I would suggest is do a 2-3 year lease on the GTS then you can decide whether you want to purchase the GTS or get the 991 (by that time the car should be sorted out).
BTW I love my GTS although I never driven the 991, the GTS is a very good car. Also remember speed of the car isn't everything, the driver is a big part of the equation as well. I know of a lot of drivers that can pass Ferrari's on DE days in a spec Miata.
My two cents, let's us know what you decide!
Best!

GTS.
The new 991 is nice but...it has grow in length, width, wheel base and is lower ala' Jag and Aston. It's now taken on obvious ques from the Panamera both inside and out that I do not like. There are some views/angles i like and some i don't. It's been totally sanitized of the character quirks that made a 911 a 911.
In my view the 991 while nice and cutting edge in technology just made the 997 GTS a classic. It's one of the best of the last of a generation and built in limited numbers to boot. In contrast we'll be awash in a sea of 991's in a year or two.
I absolutely love my GTS. Not one regret. I did not want the 991. I wanted the GTS.
Buy what gets your blood pumping. It's your $.

It's hard for me to imagine anyone "kicking" themselves for 3 to 4 years with a GTS. : They are truly an awesome 911.
To the contrary there may be those that will be kicking themselves they didn't get a GTS when they had the chance. The GTS is not only one of the best of a much loved generation of 911s it's few in number. Even more so when compared with the sea of 991s heading our way! If given the choice between my GTS today and the 991 I'd make the same choice again having picked between the two once before.
Now is the time to probably get a great deal on any GTS' left at the dealers if you can find any. I'm sure it's safe to say they are out of production.
To me the evolution is as drastic as 993 to 996 and I think the 991 just made the GTS a classic. I'm staying with my GTS even though I could make the switch if desired.
In the end get what makes you happy based on what's important to you and makes your heart race.

I opted not to wait and got a GTS...why? I'm a track guy and wanted Aero Kit, GT2 Sport Bucket Seats, Sport PASM...plus I needed to put in a roll bar and harness. 991 does not have these options yet and won't for a while.
For just a street only car....the 991S is going to be awesome. I plan on a 991 GT3 in the future.

I had a buddy who flew C-130s for the Air Force. He always told me, "Never buy an "A-model" anything. You have to know that, although Porsche has spent countless hours and millions of dollars in testing, there will be glitches in the first year of 991 production. It happens that way...
Like the fella above suggests, you might want to consider waiting for the second round of 991s before you pull the trigger - if that's the way you want to go.
This 6-speed, fully loaded Carrera 4 GTS is at Leith Porsche in Raleigh now. The photos doen't do it justice. $132K

thanks for all opinions...will be checking on GTSs but waiting to see a 991 in person as well. Would like to do European Delivery, if possible, in which case 991 will be the way to go. Let's see.
