Default Is IMS not if but when?

Is the IMS or the RMS leak a not if but when type problem? Is it bound to happen to every car at some point? I've got a 07 C2S with nearly 30k miles on it. I haven't had one problem with it. I've never even had to add oil to it in 5 years. Do I need to worry about IMS and RMS in the future?

Eh, hard to say. The bearing isn't a swap like on a 9x6 vehicle but they can still leak. I've seen the IMS seal leak and RMS. Just requires pulling the trans, clutch and flywheel if a manual. Tip and engine together then seperated to access it then. Pull RMS and IMS cover and replace.
Unless yours is leaking, I wouldn't worry. Just look ever so often.

I try not to worry about it, but with 70K miles on my 997, and reading this months article in Excellence magazine, it does rather sound like a when and not an if. I am just hoping the when is over 100,000 miles away...

WOW, another IMSBF thread, just what we need here.

Soon, you will be able to buy a late model 911 for found sofa cushion change.

I guess we'll beat this horse until all our cars have 100,000 mi and then we'll know.

5% of cars before '06. Read it, memorize it, repeat it.

Put it this way, not many people have IMS issues, less than 10% (from what I have read), majority of them are 05, since you have an 07', consider yourself lucky if you have IMS issues.

Only if you want to worry.

My advice is to follow a good oil/filter change schedule (I follow one of 5K miles) and use an approved oil and take care of other vital fluids/filters on time and just enjoy the car.

The odds are quite in your favor the RMS will *not* leak nor will the IMS fail.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Default worry

i understand a RMS repair is about $1,500, IMS $500 - $600 more - if that is correct, that is about a set of tires, much less than a cool set of wheels -is it really worth fretting over?

It's not the cost of the repair, it's that when the IMS completely fails and takes the engine with it, you can be looking at $20k for a new engine.

+1

Furthermore, the less than 10% figure (if even accurate) really applies to the 996 Carrera and 986 Boxster.

While not immune, the chance of a failure on a 997 is likely far lower than 10%. This is because Porsche upgraded the IMS bearing several times over the life of the 996 & 997. For example, a 997 '05 MY failure is far less likely compared to early model 996 cars. And it's very rare that an '06-'08 MY 997 failure is even reported on this site.

If you have '05 or early '06 cars, I would worry about it... '07/'08 is most reliable and have very very rarely had IMS issues.
