Building the brand. Previously there was nothing to brand the car on the back (that's the part you stare at in traffic). Believe it or not, not every person on the highway knows what kind of car you're driving. Remeber that time you pulled up to the gas station and the attendant said "nice ferrari"? That's a sign that the brand could use a lift. Right now BMW is very recognizable and in addition to a very recognizeable brand they have a very recognizable brand language on their products. This is what you do when you want to sell cars to a wider audience instead of just "car guys".
Also note that they've begun to raise the awareness of the product offerings. They call out the typ of product on the back as well and they're doing what they can do to be consistent and stratify the cheaper products from the more expensive ones. BMW: 1,3,5,6,7 series.... Porsche is not quite as well understood.
Of course they want to do all of this without denigrating the brand. They use elements that are consistent with the history and the brand equity to do all of this. I'm certain that there is a greater strategy at work here.

I don't care. It looks tacky. DO you really think there are many people out there who don;t recognize a 911? I don't

maybe these sports cars are starting to look more and more alike...have you seen the new jags, and astons? they are all starting to look the same except of course the fabulous ferrari's and lamborghinis's so having the porsche name at the back is needed.

Just delete the designation if you don't want it. If its plastic applied to the paint, you can have them not install it on the car. Simple, and is typically always a free option.

I'm sorry, but deleting the designation is somewhat missing the point. The bigger question is why Porsche, which prides itself on elegant industrial design, feels it necessary to assert its identity by cluttering up the elegant rear of its cars, when other high end German manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes do not.

Definitely has to do with branding.... And I offer a glimpse as to what may be going on...
A couple years ago I was in China... and I overheard a conversation.... a group of gentlemen were talking about the new Panamera... and then they moved their conversation towards the Cayenne... and then someone in the group asked a question to the others... Did you know that Porsche also makes 2 door sport cars?... So there you go... no wonder there's a need to remind people of what a Porsche 911 looks like....
