Sedan/SUV for under $50,000
As I've been looking for my 997.2, wife decided she wants a car for herself. Budget is $50,000 and looking to buy used. Something to haul kids and still sporty. Current car is Subaru Impreza.
I suggested Panamera but not in our budget. How are Cayenne S 957 (958 not within budget)?
I know many of you own another car for DD, what would you suggest?

I'm doing the same exercise for my wife to replace her CL65.
I might spend a little more but not much, maybe 65K
Likely a certified V8 Porsche or MB ML63 / E 550 / S cass, Audi Q5? /S6 /A8, BMW X5 / M5 / 7 series SUV or V8 sedan.
We will drive the V6 '11 Cayenne and '09 Cayenne GTS first...
In '06 we drove a V6 Cayenne and it was silly slow, but now they are lighter, better transmission and more HP, so it might be just OK. We will see, she is a bit spoiled with 735lb of torque. She thought the MB C300 loaner was broken because it would not move ;-)
Maybe a Turbo Diesel will feel faster to her...

Earlier Cayennes ( pre 2011) do not get the same gas mileage as the 2011-2012 BUT they are safe and transport you in comfort. How do I know, my wife and I were stopped at a light several years ago in our '08 Cayenne when I young man in a Suburban hit us in the rear going at least 30 the police said. All his airbags deployed and his front bumper was pushed back through his radiator, plus he had a small under dash fire. How did our Cayenne fair, well the rear hatch still opened, closed and latched electrically and no glass was even cracked. All the damage was on the rear hatch skin, the bumper cover and the trailer hitch ( I did not have the draw par in) We were also able to drive the Cayenne over fifty miles to the dealer at interstate speeds fro repairs. Now it was somewhat out of alignment as I had seen the accident coming and put the foot brake on hard to prevent being pushed into the intersection. He still pushed us about ten feet even with our brakes locked. Hard impact. The Suburban was towed away. I have a chronic bad back yet either my wife or I were injured. The seats are very supportive to say the least. To top it off the Cayenne is a great tow vehicle and they handle great, very nimble, easy to get in crowded parking lots etc. Let your wife drive one before you make a decision.

For a family hauler I think it makes sense to buy new. Keep in mind, if it has 30000mi, those are rough family hauler start and stop miles. Not pampered porsche miles. Audi A4 while under warranty is a nice car, 3 series, bmw X3, subie legacy or outback would be my choices.

I would get a brand new VW Touareg. You can ge the VR6 Sport which is very much like the Cayenne base model but much cheaper with basically the same engine and a lot more standard equipment. Even better, you can get the Touareg Sport TDI!

Ordered my Overland 4x4 last December, got it mid February and loving it ever since.
Great value for the dough. Go test drive and you'll see.
Good luck on your search.

Sounds like we're in the same boat less $15k difference. Curious to hear your Exp with 2011 V6. I've driven 1st gen Cayenne, but not the 2011 model. Wasn't impressed with it either.
Gang, thanks for the great ideas. Please keep them coming.
I know the common denominator here is the 997, but not surprised the suggestions cross the spectrum of makes and models.
