Default car rolling in gear ....

Parked my '05 997S on an incline yesterday, put it in gear and shut the car off.
It started to roll.
Is this a problem ??

Set the e-brake too. And turn wheel into the curb (on the downside) and away from the curb (upside). What gear did you set the car into? 1st would be better than 5th or 6th. I can move my car, by hand, in 5th gear (I've done this after a long winter hibernation) to make sure the engine is free, before cranking.

That is only a problem if you didn't want it to roll.

Which gear? how much did it roll? more than a few inches? In high gear the wheels have good mechanical advantage over the engine and they can probably turn the engine on a big hill. That's why they usually say leave it in 1st or 2nd.

1st gear if car pointing uphill, or reverse if pointing downhill?

It is also a good idea to have the front wheels pointed toward the curb when facing down hill and pointed away from the curb when facing up hill.
That way if is does roll it will roll toward the curb.

I think the fact that you're asking whether or not it's a problem is a problem?

The parking brake is called the parking brake for reason.
Parked facing down a hill the gear you put it in should be reverse.

It doesn't matter whether you use 1st or reverse gear when parking. You're going to get compression which ever way the engine rotates.

Choose whichever gear has the highest ratio. On the 997 this is 3.91:1 for first and 3.59:1 for reverse so stick it in 1st gear.

Use the parking brake when parking! Leaving it in gear is a backup should the brakes fail.

Did your car start to roll up or down the hill?

I found this thread by accident and wanted to report that I put my '11 Cayman on the rollback trailer, left it in 1st (did not put on parking brake because it was hot from a track day), I got out, then watched my car slowly roll-pause-roll-pause-roll-pause off the inclined trailer bed.

On steeper inclines, obviously the engine compression is insufficient to hold the car. Tested in a friends late model Porsche, same roll-pause-roll phenomena.

Parking brake or wheel chocks required.

Is this the first time you drive manul car? what you described would be a problem in any manual transmission car. use e brake whenever you park the car.
