Default PDK should be optional?

Since a sizable minority thinks it ok that a sunroof should be mandatory, with no choice for buyers, I'm curious what folks think about the choice between PDK and 6MT... shouldn't 6MT be required? Leave the optional ordering for the European markets only, like it is for the sunroof.

You might have really stirred the pot if your poll asked if US buyers, as with the sunroof, should have no choice and PDK was made mandatory....

Of course there should be choice....in both cases.

Too bad the 991's manual gearbox will simply be a single-clutch version of PDK and without the automatic mode.

Why on earth should 6MT be "required" when Porsche has developed a dual-clutch automated manual system that can shift gears twice as fast, do so with minimal power loss, and produce substantially faster acceleration times using the same motor????

Why on earth should people have sex if you can produce baby by IVF?

Because of the FUN factor.

At the price one pays for a Porsche or Ferrari or Lambo shouldn't they just include the 6sp or dual clutch option in the base price? Its like I've always wondered why mats and such items are extra on Porsche's and certain other cars...as you'd think at those prices and the type of buyer they should just be included and you pay for the "real" options (i.e. sunroof, sports suspensions or centerlock wheels or X51 power packages and such). Just my 2 cents.

Nice try, but that is an egregiously bad comparison, because you're assuming sex and IVF are both equivalent in achieving the same goal of reproduction. Then yes, you'd choose the one that's more fun, all else being equal. Whereas with PDK vs. manual, the manual transmission is definitely inferior in the task of changing gears - it's slower, there is more power loss between gears, and human error is allowed to introduce errors in properly rev-matched downshifts and misshifts (including the potential for engine damage or stalling).

If you want to make your sex vs. IVF example comparable, you'd have to stipulate that "standard sex" would take many years to result in a pregnancy and have a higher birth defect rate vs. IVF, which would result in an instant pregnancy and a lower birth defect rate (let's say fertilized eggs with genetic defects were selectively not implanted)...then, which would you choose if your goal was reproduction? Obviously, IVF, regardless of how "fun" the "standard sex" would be...unless you care more about "fun" and don't care it takes 3 years to have a child only to find that she has congenital heart defects and cerebral palsy.

Ugh?!? In YOUR poll (as of the time of this reply), 6 out of 47 think the sunroof should be mandatory. By anyone's count a smashing majority thinks it should be optional.

What's surprising to me is that, as of this post, 2 people actually think that the MT should be mandatory. Can't believe they're RLer's. Must be bitter anti-choice freedom-hating Socialist trolls........

Why is it surprising? Have you forgotten the level of primal 'hate' in the many PDK threads?
