Default Drive those garage queens!

I made my family reunion trip this weekend with no drama. The 997 performed flawlessly. The trip computer showed I averaged 74 mph and 26.2 mpg during the 1,154 mile trip. The car had no issues, used no oil, and was actually quite comfortable. As usual, pickup trucks and ricers were "haters"; however, most people either ignored it or seemed to like it.

The drive through the NC mountains was awesome!

Since I bought the car in March, I have put over 4,000 miles on it. This is close to twice the mileage I put on my two previous 911's (993 C4S and 40th Anniversary 996) combined! When I bought the car I committed to myself I was going to actually drive this one...and I have. The more I drive the car the more I realize it really can be used every day. I gave my 72 year old mother a ride in the car. She was hesitant at first because she thought it would be a harsh ride. After a 30 mile trip she said it was actually very comfortable and she started enjoying the experience.

As one who previously treated my Porsche's like pagan idols (to be worshipped at the Zuffenhausen altar), I encourage you new owners to drive your cars! Don't just save them for "special" trips....drive them for your every day chores. It may just make your day a little brighter!

26.2 mpg from 2006 c2? how did you do that? I get only 21-22mpg at 3K rpm but average is always at 17-18mpg at its best on a highway anyway. and my valve lifters are fine, vlaves fine too, guaranteed, so there is no leaks.

Traveling at around 75mph in 6th gear your rpms should be around 2400ish rpms.....what are you at 3k rpm?

Indeed, and thanks for posting. Sounds like a great trip.

I drive mine everyday to work (10 miles each way) and all the time over the weekends ... accumulating miles with a great big smile.

I took my first "real" drive this past weekend. I learned a valuable lesson. Some of our boring roads seem a lot more twisty and interesting at 125, than at 70. Can't wait to do it again!

125 is stupid, friend. it is not Germany here, too many people do not expect anybody going so fast and like to keep going 55 in a left lane.
just sign up for DEs with your local PCA - you will loose any desire to drive above, well, let`s put it at 85mph.

Running upper 70's I think I was turning close to 3K rpm. To average 74 there was a fair amount of driving at 80+. When I refueled I checked the mileage manually and the trip computer was reasonably close.

I think smoothness is a key on fuel economy as well. Pedal "jabbers" (people with poor throttle control who are on and off the throttle) get much worse mileage.

+1... I used to get 33 mpg with my old supercharged e36 m3. Slow excelleration from a start and easy going would get those hyper miles up in the 30's dispite the SC tuned motoring. But to be honest I have yet to try this with the 997. Still having too much fun to milk her for mpg.
