Upcoming 911 vs. next gen Cayman
On the web today a bunch of sites are showing the new cars in camouflage, some with early write-ups after riding in the cars.
I'm taken by how much better the new Cayman looks. I've always felt the Cayman is a pretty homely mid-engined car (while looks are obviously subjective, it's hard to say that the Cayman is better looking than a Lotus, Ferrari, or even a second-gen Toyota MR2), but that's changed. The car's roof line slopes beautifully over the engine and flares perfectly at the wheels.
The new 911 looks fine too, but it's an iconic shape that is hard to improve upon. I like the idea of less rear overhang and wish they could decrease the front's too, but the 911 is still a 911.
Now I'm thinking keep my 997 and look at the next Cayman S or R--

I've said it before and I'll say it again...next Cayman IS the "911" if you know what I mean. 911 looks to be taking on 6-Series, Merc SL, Aston V8 Vantage type cars. I'm sure the next GT versions of the 911 will be even more extreme though. Can't wait!

I think the Cayman and Boxster will be the spiritual succesor to the 911's sporting nature. The 911 will become a GT car closer to what the 928 was.

The Cayman is starting to look more like a 911 at the same time the 911 is starting to look more like a Panamera. Must be part of their master plan to open up the bottom end of the range for a new model.

That Cayman looks much sharper than the current model, it has something of the Audi R8 about it. I've always struggled with the "gills" on the current model, that prototype looks tremendous. I'm liking the prototype 911 shown here too, can't wait to see the production model. I don't think we've much to fear. No one has a greater vested interest than Porsche in staying true to the 911 core while making sure each iteration improves on the last.

I just got out of two Caymans (07/08), great cars and here comes the the but, the big, pregnant but, regarding the Cayman: not enough h.p. and the torque to match. Fun, fun cars, but just about any 997
would drag them around by the t---. A new S with PDK and and a snotty Tubi exhaust would be a blast, and a real value in the sports car market. And then a guy just walks away from you with a 997. So. Monday morning you buy a 997 and put an end to that business. Worked for me. Have had this 911 for almost 2 years, never wanted the Caymans back.
