02 C4S or 05 997
I'm in the market for my 1st 911(coming from a 928) and I'm torn between an 02 C4S with 55k on the clock and an 05 C2 with 76k. One's listed with a dealer (the 05), the other is private sale. The 02 will be cheaper (by a few thousand) but I like the look and upgrades of the 05. I'm just wary of the miles. Thought?

Never liked the front end (headlights) of the 996....so the choice would be easy for me to select the 997 over it.
A properly maintained Porsche, with 76,000 miles is nothing, in the big picture. But proper maintenance is the key. The DME report on the 997 will be much more telling than the 996's.
And 76,000 miles over 5.5 years is only <14,000/year. Pretty average in the scope of a car being driven on a yearly basis.

Daily driver for you or weekend use? ppi'ed 76K car and only putting 2-3K/yr would last you long time.
76K car planning to put 30K/year might be another story.
That being said - I think the 997s is much better looking.

I would never considered the 996, it looks bad both interior/exterior. I would avoid the 05' if necessary due to IMS issues, can you stretch your budget a big and go for an 06' 997. Good luck, I would not worry about the mileage as long as it checks out fine.

I'd probably be putting about 5 to 7k/yr on the car. Good point about the IMS issues I'll see what comess up. Any suggestions for a PPI in NY city area?

But the '05 should be able to get the IMS bearing replaced without cracking the motor. But on the IMS bearing Guardian that Flat 6 is selling and buy the '05 especially that it's an S...no brainer IMO.

I'd go for the 05'. At that mileage, if possible during the ppi, I'd have the Air oil separator checked (AOS), the coolant tank for cracks or leakage, the serpentine belt, and the spark plugs and coil packs for cracks. Also, try to find out the build date of it. If it's an early build date, you can get the IMS retrofit done. If it's a later build date, or if you go for an 06' you cannot get an IMS retrofit done, and 06's are not immune to the IMS problem.

I had a 996, and quite frankly, I like the .2 version headlights
also, the interior isn't much worse than the 997 (IMO)
shifting has a shorter throw in the 997, and that's was a big welcome. increased power too (add in the fact the C4 will carry more weight as well). plus, I think, there are more rms/ims issues with the 996, but reports of these in general may be blown out of proportion
general rule of thumb is buy the latest MY you can afford
