996C4S is the best looking 996, imho. That said, let the test drive be the selling point. Will you want/need an awd car? Will you appreciate the RWD C2S more? Focus less on price and more on emotion.

I'd get a 2006 997. A little more peace of mind. C4S, is a sharp looking 996. It will be slower than the 997S, 35 hp less and 4wd heft.

The 05 997S is a fine car....two things going for it that counter the IMS issue--it's been driven regularly, and it is a 3.8 M97 engine. The 3.6 engines were more problematic in 05.

At this point, I'd think the 05 would be well-sorted (ie if it hasn't broke yet ...) and is clearly a daily driver. Can probably be had for a significant discount as many (most) of these cars won't have that kind of mileage. For example, I bought my 07 in March with 11,000 miles ... Virtually brand new!

Good luck with your decision.

Pick whichever you like better and feel more comfortable with. Personally the only upgrade from my 996 c4s would be an 09+ car or turbo. Also I would not buy a car with that many miles, it may just be but I would always have wished I had waited for the right car.

I had a very similar dilemma a few mths ago. 02 996TT or a 05 997 C2.

The verdict was the 997. The light and interior looks much nicer on the the 997. I realize I will lose the power and prestige of a TT but frankly the C2 is much more powerful than my previous BMW.

Any regrets? Not at all. I think the looks of the 996 will drive me crazy whereas the "lack of power" of a C2 does not bother me at all.

And with the 991 coming up, I think the 996 will look really dated in a year. I actually think the 997 kind of looks similar to the 991 whereas the 996 will look really old.

When I lived in Florida, I had an 02 C4s that I traded for an 05 997. I liked the looks of the new 997s but regretted it after I did it. The 02 C4S was just an awsome handling car that inspired confidence. However, the seats in the newer 911 were more comfortable and the car was more comfortable for long drives. I now have an 06 C2S, but still miss that 02 C4S.

Get the '05 S. I have one and love it. No problems at all with mine.

I had been thinking 996 for myself but it seems like 997's are coming down in price (at least early 997's with higher mileage). '05 Cab at CarMax (not that I would buy a Porsche at Carmax), with 68k for only $39,998. No haggling from there but sub $40k for an '05 cab seems like a good deal to me.

Quick Reply: 02 C4S or 05 997
