Unhappy Son's Birthday Wish

Ever since I was a kid ( 1960's ), I had always wanted a Porsche 911. I've seen every commercial for them, and lucky enough, my business has been doing great the past decade, and own 2 911's. I have a 996 C4S and love it. But I recently got a 2011 997.2 Turbo from my local dealer. My son adores Porsches, and is 19. Ever since he was a kid he's been saving, just like I have. His 20th Birthday is coming up in August, and he wants to drive a Porsche. He's a very cautious driver and I trust him a lot, but I'm not sure if I should let him drive my 997 or my 996. When I was 15, I was offered to drive my friend's dad's porsche 911 Carrera RS. The driveway was a quartermile, and it was a 5-speed. When I drove that car, it was the best experience of my life, until I had my son, and picked up the 996. Should I let my Son enjoy that feeling or not?

12 years ago, my 11 year old son Damian died unexpectidly in his sleep. We still don't know the cause. Fortunately, my daughter, Damian's twin sister, is now 23 and is alive and healthy.

I would have loved to have had the opportunity to let my son deive the Porsche when he turned 20.

Does that answer your question?

Sure! I destroyed two Porsches by the time I was his age.

Yes. I've let my son at age 20, do some track days with our C2S we had a couple years ago. (I was there too). We both cherish those events. Were planing another. Great memories.

In your initial question, you associate one of the best experiences of your life with your friend's dad. Don't you think it would be even better if it was with your dad? Let him drive the car, and go along for the ride! I know that's what I'll be doing with my son.

Really??? Is this really a question, he is your kid, fresh and blood. Unless he is a menace and irresponsible, which he isn't according to you, he's cautious and you trust him. Why wouldn't you? As much as I love Porsches, to me it's still a car. I let anyone I know and trust drive it. Things you owned are only fun when you can share it.

I'm confused why he hasn't driven them already?

Any child of mine is rocking the DMV driving test in a GT3.

Since he has wanted a Porsche since he was much younger now is the time to teach him what the marque is all about, go for a drive together! Let him experience what these cars are all about, you will both remember that time together forever!

Maybe some pics of the big grin on his face too!

I agree...let him drive it. I would probably go with him though. I did some really dumb things when I was a kid in cars...wouldn't want him to get hurt. With great power comes great responsibility...etc. etc.

hell i let my 3 year old sit in my lap and steer the car in my driveway almost every day when i get home from work. he loves it. he is already asking if he can have the car someday. you only live once, and only get to do these kinds of things with your kids for so long.

My goodness Tim, I am so sorry about the loss of your son. may he RIP.
