Okay, thanks!

I addressed it with a shorty open box wrench... https://rennlist.com/forums/9851332-post26.html

Thanks USMC

I was finally able to get a box wrench in there, its 15mm if anyone else needs to do it. Its a pain in the butt to deal with the slipping T-nut. Was able to tighten it up and get the belt off.

To replace the engine air filter and the belt took me 1.5 hours, would have been much faster if not for the T-nut slipping.

If I can do it pretty much anyone can

Thanks for the DIY, it was a great help

I ordered a belt and it's sitting on a shelf. I'll get to this soon - thanks to all for another great DIY thread!

Now here's my request list for future instructs:
- pollen filter (I'm sure very easy but where is it?)
- air filter - easy too I'm sure...
- brake pads...
- brake line flush...
Pollen filter is in the frunk area. To the left of the battery. Remove the cover and unscrew the bolt that holds the retainer bracket. Slide the old one out and put the new one in. Very easy even if not mechanically inclined.

To change the air filter you need to remove the box. One hose clamp and two plugs to loosen the the air box comes out pulling straight up. The filter is rather long and it's inside the box. Again, very easy DIY.

I didn't attempt the brakes yet because they are still in good shape.

USMC_DS1 beat me to the reply. You got it figured out. That is exactly what I did. I did not have a stubby wrench, but got it to work with a short box wrench.

I did need a 2nd pair of hands to get the belt over the last pulley while I held the tensioner over in the loose position. My 10 year old daughter helped me there. It was a great bonding moment.

She still reminds me how she saved me a towing and mechanics fee! I'll owe her for that until she is 30 I'm sure.

I don't have the tools, or garage to do this, asked my indy, said $150 or so for parts/labour, stealership was $250. I am at 25K miles, 6yrs old... should I do this?

On another note, stealership quoted $680 for spark plugs, sounds lower than some other quotes I saw on this thread... indy cost is around $300.

Those Indy prices are reasonable for both items... even the p-dealer price is decent for stealership pricing. FWIW, should you ever pick up some tools and use of a garage know that the prices are for these parts are: s-belt($30) and set of plugs($60).

Here is a YouTube video on how to replace the belt on a 996.

The process is very similar to a 997. Dead easy!

I replaced my belt according to these instructions and it made it very easy. Thanks to the OP!

After replacement I noticed a harmonic squeal at startup which eventually faded as car warmed. Dumping a small cap of water on the belt silenced it immediately until the water evaporated. I figured it was a bad belt or I had made an error in the process (not much to screw up though, except my knuckles!).

I have the car apart and notice that the wheel for the A/C compressor can be wiggled ever so slightly fore and aft. Is this normal? Could it be a contributing factor?

I examined the belt and it seems fine, not sure why a new one would squeal. I may go pick another up tomorrow morning.

Thoughts?

EDIT: For anyone that happens upon this later, the squeal was the result of a worn tensioner pulley. Replacement has resolved the issue.
