Will there be riots in Vancouver tonight
if the Bruins get through the next 20 minutes and win the Stanley Cup? 1994 riots were terrible when the Canucks lost to the Rangers. Keep your P cars in the garage.

I think cities need to up the disincentive for this type of behavior. Water cannons or german shepards would be a start.

It's ridiculous. Despite my allegiance to Vancouver, Boston won fair and square. The aftermath does not represent Vancouver or Canadians in any way but only a select few criminals. The good news? The city is cleaned up and it's a beautiful day. Congratulations Boston! Next!

I don't get the riots either, I was in downtown Denver when the Bronco's won their first Superbowl. It started as a peaceful party, then went out of control quick. I guess that's what happens when you have a lot of drunk people. You had guys getting on top of people's cars, then started stomping on it until the windows shattered. Guys trying to flip cars, bonfires that goes out of control. Girls stripping (okay wasn't too bad). Cops starting coming in, then the chaos begins.

Unfortunately, I expect the same would be the case in Vancouver. It seems most cities have low-lifes that like to exploit these mob situations due to the safety in numbers. I think the crowd size in Vancouver last night overwhelmed the police. And in our current society, police get criticized if it is deemed they over-react by using too much force. I don't envy the police in these situations because we've put them in a no-win situation.
Vancouver is my home city, but I wasn't proud of the "fans" last night. They are very poor losers.

Vancouver is a city full of contrasts and is the most extreme in Canada in terms of representing both ends of the economic spectrum. Canada's richest and poorest mashed into one of the most dense urban environments in North America.
That mix always results in a solid population of thugs - people unhappy with their lot and looking for scapegoats.
That's what we see here - simple thuggery. Nothing to do with sports fans.

I've always thought Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited, and I've been around the world.
Regardless where they're from, what compells a bunch of drunken losers to think they can destroy people's personal property, and public property, because a local sports team didn't do well is beyond my ability to comprehend. Each and every one of those lads/lasses that were arrested should be held financially responsible for whatever the costs are to restore the city and people's property to where it was before the madness began.
Write a check for a couple thousand, and I promise you they won't do it again...

Last night's riot had little to do with the Canucks or a Hockey game. It wasn't sports fans who ignited the ugliness. The small group of young people who started things used the grouping of large number of people into a confined space to start a planned riot. The Police knew many of them from the protests around the Olympics and whenever the G8 gather in our city.
It was embarrassing yes, but no mistake that behaviour with a Vancouver Hockey fan or my city in General. Like most large cities, we have an element of our society that just has a mission to cause anarchy. The Stanley Cup just happened to be their venue and their route to publicity.
I was at the game last night and Boston won because they were the better team during the playoffs. You just need to look at the stats to see that. The Canucks gave all of us a great series and good hockey into June! They deserve credit for that.
From a beautiful city (still),
Greg
