Third Radiator Install - Track Temp Results
After driving Mid-Ohio in May with a high ambient of 62F and seeing oil temps of 270F I decided I needed to do something to get the temperature down. About a month ago I had a third radiator installed at Porsche of the Village. Dropped the car off in the morning and picked it up in the afternoon.
Last weekend I was at Mid-Ohio with NNJR and the air temperature got into the 90's. The sessions were longer than those in May and I was driving the car harder. At the end of the weekend I never got over 250F. I'm chalking this mod up as a win.
On a side note a friend was running the same car as mine except he had PDK. He decided to quit when his car hit an oil temp over 270F. I believe he may be contemplating a third radiator kit.
Almost forgot, both cars water temps were pegged right on 175F. Imagine that.

How did you determine actual temps?

What instrument or mod are you using to measure oil temperatures?

It was designed for very hot climates, like Dubai... so, if really justified, fine, but it adds weight...

The oil temperature read outs are accurate. The coolant (water and EGW) are not. The coolant stops at around 175ºF unless the coolant gets considerably hotter, whereupon it suddenly moves up to that higher temperature.
For evaluating the purchase of a third radiator, just use the oil temp gage as an honest representation of how hot things are getting in your engine.
For the guy with the PDK and the higher temps, I'm assuming he has a MY09 car--which was before they routinely put third coolers on all the PDK cars.

Dan: the 3rd radiator appeared in PDK cars in MY11, due to some high track temps in Dubai. My MY10 PDK car is fine and I have no plans to add a 3rd radiator, which for me would just be adding weight. I do not see the need for it and my car runs often long hours at high revs, without any issues.

Although I have had similar oil temps occasionally with the 997 (around 275ºF) most of the time I never encounter ambient temperatures that would dictate a third cooler. I person0ally think it's a good idea.
I recall my air cooled days with the WORST year Porsche ever made a 911--1977. I recall on one occasion the oil temperature getting to 340ºF!!! Aah, the days of air cooled engines, thermal reactors, and Oklahoma summers--and a race course!

So is this 3rd "radiator" a tranny cooler for the auto/PDK or an oil cooler??? I can see an oil cooler being a very good idea but a 3rd radiator (for the coolant) would do very minimal for oil temps.
I live in FL and track the car in FL or GA and the temps down here get hot but I've never seen over 250 on the oil temp. Usually it will get to just under but as soon as I take a cool down lap it goes back to 225. I'm a 6 speed so I don't know if that makes a difference to the PDK cars.
