Can anyone comment on where to put the jack to lift the car and use the factory jack points, like in Edgy01's post? Is there a "Porsche approved" spot?

That is only thing I don't care for with this method is lifting the car with the jack not on a factory lift point.
I use some like the ones Joe is referencing. The closest match I can find was on eBay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-jack-pad-/191709086898 if SmokinGTS no longer makes these. You can buy one from this guy on Ebay for $20 or four for $40 as shown in the link. Like the nylon ones I have (which I don't see anymore), I think the rubbery/nylon/delrin approach is better that aluminum for the pad since it will be easier on the metal lift point.
The fact that they latch-in with a twist is smart too, just don't forget to remove them when done. I'm more comfortable with the lock-in approach since it has virtually no chance of slipping off as compared to the hockey puck idea. I drove around with one stuck in the lift point a couple of days once before it crossed my mind.

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly. The Porsche approved lift spots can be identified easily since they are a little lower than the surround body and they have the elliptical slot for locking in the jack pads. They are described in the owner's manual. If you don't have that here is a screenshot:

Edgy 01 (Dan) did a great write up on raising a 997. Search and ye shall find. Sorry, the mobile app doesn't do this well so I am leaving the work to you.

The 4 for $40 pads are sweet as well.
I bought my Esco jack stands one time when someone recommended them on the 993 forum. A great stand. Very secure.
I have been using Dan's method on 964, 993(different suspension points) and the 997. Since I only have one floor jack, I slip one of my ramps under the rear tire to lower the car down on and then move the jack to the back of the car and raise it again high enough to slip the last jack stand in. Works well.
FWIW OTC sells a fairly flat aluminum jackstand that works pretty well and are lightweight. You can find them on Amazon. FWIW OTC is the OE supplier of many of the tools used in the auto industry
