I think tsearle00 is saying that after the mechanic found the particles during a routine oil change, he had them go ahead and change the bearing, flush the oil 6 times, and install a magnetic drain plug. The "what's next" comment is asking what will the next problem bring.

It's kind of all jambed together and a bit hard to decipher, but that's my take on it. Maybe he can clear that up for us.
That would make sense if he was being rhetorical and meant what's next being now that he's installed the new bearing. I interpreted his post as if he had put the L&N in and six oil changes later he had metal in his oil and was looking for advice. That's why it would be nice if he explained. I think if he had found metal particles and flushed and replaced the bearing, the post would be "thank my lucky stars I dodged a bullet" instead of what's next.

The post #110 by dadeo illustrates my concern with tsearle00's post in that it is also a post on something that has not been known to happen and also dadeo's one and only post on Rennlist.

Early this spring I decided to trade my 981 for a 997 (also considered 996s an M3s). I spent, and still spend, hours upon hours lurking on this site, among others, trying to get a handle on the modes and chances of catastrophic failure; having been a victim of a Mercedes W272 balance shaft.

I found that there was a lot of talk about 997 IMS failures, but very little empirical evidence of it. Certainly, it appears to occur, but nowhere near the levels of 996 failures. What I saw in the 996 discussions, was members who experienced the problem, discussed it, and sought solutions. However, on this board, there were way too many recent join date, single post, members whose single post was a "mine failed". I pretty much decided to disregard those posts. I guess I did so at my own peril, but they just seemed too contrived.

Sure, this guy doesn't have to justify himself to the internet mob, and I hope his 997 is ok. However, this is exactly the type of post that hit me as suspect.

Wait, so you're saying a guy joined up in 2011 with the intent to make a troll post 3 years later. Sounds like a stretch to me, but it is the internet.

Yeah, that 2011 join date gave me pause. My point is that skepticism isn't misplaced because so many of the one-off posts look just like this.

I also think most people, if they lost their engine would post more than once. Some people are very private, but if they are that private why would they post in the first place? Additionally, they might want to share what they have been through if only to blow steam or benefit the other members.

I had engine failure over a year and a half ago on my '05 997 C2S. I use Rennlist to seek advice, but a lot of advice is already posted. No need to re-ask questions if they're already answered many times over. All I need now is an affordable replacement 997 3.6 or 3.8 engine. No sense crying over the past - just looking forward. When she's running again, I'll be one happy camper!

I understand. Was the IMS bearing OEM or the LN Engineering replacement bearing? Do you know the build or in service date of your 997 in '05?

There are a few on eBay. Maybe check Pelican too if you have'nt yet.

Was the engine failure the result of an IMS bearing failure, a rod bolt failure or something else?

Has anyone gone through this whole thread and figured out how many of the 6% failures were 2005 cars and how many were 2006 or newer?

Lets ask the question the right way - how many with the larger revised bearing which includes, for the most part, 2005 with buiild dates of 03/05 and later. Mine is a 2005 with a build date of 03/5 and larger bearing which i know for sure based on visual with my indie.

Hey all.. Lurking for ever on the site but decided to join for a question.. I noticed a class action settlement

here http://www.imsporschesettlement.com/
Would be interesting to see how many claims have actually been made (better idea of failure rate). Additionally, I wonder if current owners would be entitled to some type of settlement/fix.

Dare I say we will see a lot of 996's on the market with update engines?

Hi all,
Just some more data on an early build 997.
I just had the IMS replaced as preventative maintenance. My car is a 8/2004 build 3.6L. It had the single row replaceable IMS bearing and was replaced with the LN retrofit bearing. The original bearing was in perfect shape at 38,000 miles and 10 yrs! It had been 10 years and I figured it was time just in case. I'm glad I did it so no worries and I can enjoy the car.
Also did 40k service and brake/clutch fluid and trans fluid change. The thing runs like a dream!
