Default Favorite DC Area Drives?

Where do you go when you want to play?

I've a couple of spots along the Clara Barton Parkway to blast up to speed, though I worry about deer and Park Police. Any feisty fun roads that might be lightly trafficked early in the morning?

Cheers -
Marc

Northern montgomery county between rockville, poolesville, and frederick have LOTS of nice quiet roads to enjoy. No really good top speed areas, but lots of nice rural twisties.

I bought my 911 since I moved to California, but I have often fantasized about blowing down the GW Parkway at 5am at 125mph. What a ride that would be.

Just for the record, one shouldn't do such things.

summit point. more fun, SAFER/LEGAL, and faster than 125.

I was going to suggest a 2.1 mile closed loop, located near Winchester VA.. called Summit Point (or the shorter Shenedoah or Jefferson circuits)

A car like the 997 has SOO much ability it really can't be safely exploited on the local roads. That said, Clara Barton, GW Parkway, 193 in McLean, and almost any country road in Western Montgomery, Frederick and Loudoun counties offer lots of nice views and curves.

Not sure where your specifically located but in Northern VA in Burke, popes head road and fairfax station road are set in the woods and have some nice turns with a lot of elevation changes. I take my bike and have a blast out there, the 997 is great on them as well. Its about a 7 mile stretch if you take the two roads as a complete circle.

Clara barton is fun too but only for that 1 mile stretch near the CO canal park entrance.

It's a mess around here with all the over-eager police, but I usually get my kicks on some of the backroads between Leesburg, Ashburn, and South Riding...

I liked the skyline drive when I was down there for a few months.

Skyline drive is scenic but not a very fun drive. It has a strictly enforced 35 mph speed limit, lots of park police and lots of slow traffic. Some of the roads that cross through the Shenandoah mountains are great though, like Rt 33.

If you want to go fast join PCA and go to a DE at Summit Point. Or drive up there and do a FATT (Friday at the track) day. That's a scenic drive just getting there.

If you want a nice (slow) scenic drive take 108 out to Olney, get on Georgia Ave (yes that one) but go north, explore the Tridelphia area (Roxbury Road I think to Tridelphia Road), you can take that or get back on Georgia (97) or take 32 north up to Frederick Road (144) go west to route 27 and back down (south) on 27 to Germantown/Gaithersburg home.

Explore some of the roads out off I-70 going towards Fredrick, MD out past Rockville. There are more than a few nice twisty roads up there and in the Skyline drive area in VA or down near Lurray Cavaerns that are nice for a sports car. You won't go 125 mph and all but you'll enjoy yourself safely at or just a bit over the speed limit. Cheers

Thanks for the great ideas and suggestions - I had to miss the Potomac Region HPDC last weekend to leave on a business trip, so no Summit Point for me yet. Am now thinking of Porsche Driving School Performance class in early June to get me trained up.

Cheers -

I *think* only Potomac PCA requires either HPDC or 3 AX events before allowing you to DE.. Most PCA regions do NOT have this restriction. Given slow economic times, you might also look into trying a BMW, MB or AUDI event at Summit Point as well. Or just look for another region PCA event at SP.

Check out the guys at the M3post..they do a great skyline run drive and could at least give you the route they use. I've done it with them in my e92 M3 and its great in a BMW. Would likley be better in a Porsche!
