The 991 (new 911) will be unveiled this fall at the Frankfurt auto show and go on sale as a 2012 model.

The 991 will be a bigger car ( the 997 is already quite large compared to the 911/964/993) and one question is whether or not the new car will lose what is left of the raw edge in the 997.
My fear is the the 911 eventially becomes an Astin Martin or Jaguar. Smoother, quieter, softer.... We will have to wait and see.

^^ The wheelbase on the 991 will be equal to the 914's wheelbase. And I wouldn't fear this car being watered down. In various interviews, the new head of Porsche R&D said that the next generation 911's all need to feel and sound more like the GT3. He also said that just because there is a Panamera and Cayenne doesn't mean the 911 will turn into a luxury car. He said that the main challenge with the 991 is to make it more usable, yet more sporty than ever before. Looking at the interior spy pictures, the sloping center console, while like the Panamera's, is much slimmer, is devoid of many of the Panamera's buttons, and very dynamic, as the gear lever is very close to level with the steering wheel, allowing for faster gear changes.

The only thing that worries me about the car is the new Euro pedestrian laws that require the front end of newly manufactured cars to be 'taller' than they've been in the past. I can't imagine a new Porsche with a taller front fascia.
My dealer told me the next 911s will be sold as 2013s. I'm not the regional expert on when they'll be released, so I'll have to wait and see for myself.

I am just concerned by the amount of electronics it will have. The computer will display a fault for a Yes and for a No.
All newer cars are becoming less and less reliable from an electrical perspective. My advice: time to move and buy a house really close to your dealer....

Correct, the EU regs are to allow for hood deformation space so that pedestrians aren't impacted by hard engine parts. Not an issue with rear- and mid-engined vehicles.
Whether it ends up being a 2012 or 2013 is a marketing move TBD.
Rumors are that the 991 will be lighter, and likely more powerful, so performance and fuel economy should improve. While wheelbase is longer, overall length will probably not be. No reason to think it won't be a better car than the 997 in all aspects, but we shall see...
