Default Strange Whine

My 2006 C2 manual shift with 52k miles on the clock suffered an engine failure last June. Scavenge pump died and then the cam chain broke driving one of the cylinder banks.

The problem is documented here:

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index..._1#entry178556

Since the rebuild the car has been fantastic. The only problem i have is a slight whine which seems to be getting worse. It is most noticeable when the car is between 2k and 3k rpm. Standing or moving, its the same and with the clutch depressed or released it is the same.

AC on or off makes no difference either.

I have had the polyrib belt and idler and tension pulley replaced, no change. Now I am thinking maybe it is the alternator or waterpump.

Any ideas from the experts? sound recording is attached, varying 2k to 3k.

Have you run over a PDK owner recently?

But on the serious, I'd take that in tout suite, especially since you're under warranty.

I have a 2008CS. I bought it new and it now has 6000 miles. It has had a whine in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range since I got it. Some folks have stated that it is normal. I am not sure if it is a pully or alternator or something else.

Many thanks for the replies, it is really appreciated. I did take my C2 to the Porsche Dealer (I live in the UK) and they unsurprisingly said they could not hear anything unusual. I also had one of most reputable independents take a look (AutoFarm) as they had done a full independent check of the rebuild and they could not find anything unusual either. So I had the polyrib and pulleys done just to be sure and it wasn't those.

Fahrer - does yours sound like the clip I posted? The recording was done while the car was stationary. If yours is the same, then maybe I am just being paranoid.

I've realised the sound clip is not an mp3 So I converted it and here is the mp3 version which should play for everyone. Let me know what you think

Do you really need to zip? I think that's why I can't open it..?

The MP3 should play. It works here using Winamp.
This forum does not allow the uploading of .mp3 it seems.

Sounds almost like an alternator whine.

Could it be the a/c compressor?

How did you record this sound? Is this from inside the cabin while driving, or with the back open and revving at standstill?

That's not a sound I'm used to, but I'm always in the car.

Sorry been a way for a day with no access. The clip was recorded with the car stationary and the from ouside the rear of the car with the lid down.

When I drive the car, I can hear it inside too where it sounds like a whining noise between 2k and 3k above this, it kind of disappears into the general road noise.

Unfortunately I can only post zip folders on Rennlist, so will do a utube clip and post that over the weekend.

I dont know what mine sounds like from the outside, but i think i have a similar whine, which begins at about 3500rpms and goes all the way up. I would also like to know if this is normal or am i being paranoid?

This thread is almost a year old. And for some reason I could not open the file last year. But I just listened to the sound clip, and I have to say that this is exactly what my 911 sounds like. I think this is completely normal. The 911 engine sound is known for a distinctive whine when it revs up. The whine was apparent back in the days of the air cooled engine and I have read that the engineers went to great lengths to retain the signature 911 whine when the water cooled engine was designed.
