To give you some idea of what you'll need to pay go to the Porsche website where they have a dealer search facility.
If I enter a 997 cabrio with unlimited price there are 312 in the USA. If I reduce the price to under $60k there are 45. Between $40k and $50k there are 7 and none below $40k.
Bear in mind that these prices are the asking prices. I've searched for all cars regardless of transmission type, interior/exterior colour, options etc.
If you want a CPO car which will come with a Porsche 2 year warranty and be in very good condition the figures are 197 in USA with no price restriction, 26 below $60k and only 2 between $40k and $50k.
If you want cheaper than these or more choice you'll need to look at private sales or non Porsche dealers via the web sites already mentioned.

Call this guy.
Ask him if he's selling.
That way it'll already be set up the way you want:

WHERE you live has a lot to do with the price of a car, and availability. I would imagine that in West Virginia in a small town the chance of finding a reasonable 997 would be much harder than in downtown LA, CA
Keep in mind that buying a 997 is not all about the price. There are so many other issues going on there. If you focus entirely upon the price you will fail.

Looks like a 997... but its a 996... cheap as chips, and you can bling it out for way under $40k total
From what ive seen wickedmotors make some great cars ;-o
