Only in some states. In Kalifornia (and other states) you pay sales tax on the full price.

It's not unusual for Porsche to sell in the same model year two versions of the "911." This was done in 1989 when they introduced the Carrera 4 (964) cars while still pushing the older 911s out the door (Carrera 3.2).

It was also done in 2005.

Understood. My question is more about how early the 2012 model year is beginning in 2011 and why? This is the part that seems different this time. For example why with the GTS which just started delivery after Christmas are there orders being taken for late spring/early summer as 2012. Talk about a short year???

If you want to know a group of owners that experienced a super short model year, talk to the original US folks that purchased a '10 gt3 997.2 RS's. First deliveries were made in late Feb/early March of 2010 and ended a few months later, around May/early June of 2010, when the MY2011's 997.2 RS's arrived! And now all 997.2 RS's owners are finding out there might be a Limited Edition 4.0 gt3RS this summer! z356

The practice must be catching. My brother who works for Ford just sent me link to 2012 Ford Mustang GT (not the new Boss 302) on a dealer lot available for sale. More model year confusion for all. Again I get it when a new model is introduced, I don't get blurring the start date on existing models, whats next December 2011 the dealers will have in stock 2013 cars?

This is not a new game...
Correct; not a new game. I hear that BMW is starting production of the 2012 X5 next month, even though it underwent a facelift last summer as a 2011. Having only had my 2011 for three months and 2.5k miles, it is a bit irritating; of course it is nice to have as 'new' a vehicle as possible.

That said, when changes between model years are minor or nonexistent, it is condition and mileage that drives resale value.

I am praying that Porsche will sell the current GT3 into MY2012. Any word? I know they did it in 2005 that way...

I am going to guess that the tie in here has something to do with:

1. In 1963 the 901 was introduced at the Frankfurt motor show. The first showing of what became the 911 body style.
2. 50th anniversary of the 911 body style is coming up.
3. 991 to be introduced.

It is possible that Porsche is trying to make the 3 events of: 991 introduction, 2011 Frankfurt motor show, and 50th anniversary (as a 2013 model) all meet up.

I believe that US regulations allow you to designate a MY across one year changeover. I had an E36 95 M3. The 95 M3s were made from early 1994 through end of 1995. Porsche could carry the 2012 MY from April 2011 through end of 2012 if they wanted to. But, the cars built on Jan 1 2013 could not be a 2012.

Regards,
Marc

I bought a new BMW M3 via European Delivery in October 1995. Normally, it should have been a MY1996, but they called it a MY1995 since there was some engine issue for US where they couldn't name it a '06. When I sold it, I basically suffered an 'extra' year of depreciation, which was not appreciated. Later in 1996, there was a few 1996 M3's that arrived in late Spring of 1996, but not many. The MY1997 M3's arrived early in summer of 1996 and these '96 M3's were the shortest production run of M3's ever for the US, with very few examples produced. z356
