997.2 S Windshield Replacement
I just noticed a small chip along the left edge of my windshield. Does this look like a rock or defect? I know it would be hard to prove however it doesn't look like a standard crack. What's your thought and any suggestions for replacement? Dealer or Windshield Repair Company? I'm in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Thanks

Chances are very good the dealer will sub-contract the windshield replacement to a windshield replacement business. Safelite is used by many dealers up here in the SF bay area.
I had the WS in my 02 Boxster replaced by a Safelite person. He showed up with factory glass and had the old WS out and the new in in just a few hours.
This was more than a few years ago and the replacement WS has been just fine. Trouble is the WS is now pitted and even has a rock chip (small thankfully) and could stand replacement.
Oh, I filed a claim for a new WS with my insurance company but my deductible ($500) was just about $100 short of the total price. IOWs, the price sans any insurance involvement would have been around $600.
Check with your dealer and see what it charges for the job. Some dealers do not charge much of a premium for this even though they turn it over to a company that specializes in WS replacement while other dealers use these WS jobs as a profit center, big time (one more than doubled the Safelite price!).
Sincerely,
Macster.

Safelite performed my WS replacement. They have the best warranty in the buisness. I believe if you want the OEM replacement you would require your insurance to approve, if not, they will install the aftermarket replacement. The entire job will take approx 2-3 hours. Don't drive the car until 12 hours of drying time and do not clean until 48 hours.
It depends what state because florida has a no fault for WS replacement. The bill was $1,100.00 but I paid ZERO.

How does the third-party glass compare to the OEM glass? Does it pit less/more?
We should note that on a 911 the windshield is a structural item.

I'm not aware of a non-OEM windshield being available for these things yet.
Historically, I have found replacement glass to be far more capable of handling rock impacts than the OEM stuff.
