Default Insurance solution to RMS and IMS

I am going with Fidelity Warranty (www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com) for my extended warranty contract. They do cover IMS and RMS failures (and the resulting damage) under their basic Powertrain coverage. Pricing depends upon you car year and mileage. As a reference point I have a 2005 997S with 12K miles and the basic coverage for 4 years/48,000 miles is $2277. Not bad considering the cost of an IMS failure.

For an extra $600 I basically will get total car coverage for many many other items. I am buying this through a local Porsche dealer in NJ. All warranty work can be done by Porsche or any "Legal Repair Shop that is ASE CERTIFIED" per the contract.

Sounds like a good logical choice.

What does a re-manufactured engine run these days ? $10k ??
So you are paying the cost of almost a quarter of that betting against that you will have an IMS 'event" within the next 4 years...
OR..
RMS was $700 or so to fix, so you are paying for more than 3 of those over the next 4 years.

Seems like the failure rate isnt that high in reality is it ?

I was able to get a good look at the list of things that go in 997's (a good friend at the dealer) so I am really hedging against the 10-12 "niggling things" that they have seen go wrong in these cars. The estimated cost for these "niggling things" per my buddy will run you about $7-8K not including the cost of an IMS failure. IMS coverage in this case is a bonus. Hopefully I will never need this Insurance just like with any other Insurance Policy.

I guess it all depends on your tolerance for risk.

It's amazing to me that people still believe that insurance companies are in the business of losing money..................

Jakes: Of course they break - why do you think the Service Department is the major $$ maker for a dealer. Without it they could not survive.

boolala: Who said we believe that? Nonetheless, I'll make you a bet. You keep track of your repair costs over the next 4 years and I will keep track of mine. The one with the lowest out of pocket gets bragging rights and the loser has to display an Avatar at the choice of the winner. Deal?

With your logic since I have not had a traffic accident ever I should only carry liability coverage on my car?

That's an absolutely idiotic comparison.

I'll let you figure it out to redeem yourself by thinking this one through. I'll give you a hint if you should need it, though.

Warranties are about a state of mind. If it makes you feel good go for it. I got a new set of heads and cylinders on a 93 RSA along with a transmission on an extended warranty. I only wish that I could have purchased one on my X and XX. That would have been money well spent.

What I find funny is that people think nothing of spending $3000 to avoid having to make a $700 repair

However, what is really funny is that each and every one of us purchasing a new car also purchases a warranty.

From what I have heard, an engnier replacement runs nearer $16k. And as for a RMS at $700, you have got to be kidding! Maybe if you do it yourself.

You can't compare insurance where the work will be done at a Porsche dealer to prices where you do it yourself or you use an indi cheap guy.

Anyway, $500 a year is no big deal for peace of mind... my electricity bill is that per month during summer.
