Default BUY 997 C2 or Cayman S

Hi Everyone,

I have budgeted to buy the 997 C2. But, before I pay the deposit I would appreciate advice whether I am making the right decision. My budget is only up to C2 so a C2S is a no no. I have driven both and foud the Cayman a better and easier to handle. But, I prefer the 997 looks and shape. I'm very confuse.....need help...

Buy what you can more easily afford. Many love the handling of the Cayman over the Carrera. You'll need more money again real soon for new tires!

I thought this through myself and even though some reviews will say the Cayman is a better handling car, one review stated that if you're driving a Cayman and you come up to a 997 at the lights, you'll wish you had that car.

I bought a 997 C2 and am very happy for it. Do I wish I had an "S" - not really, I rather wish I had some accoutrements like full leather with deviated stitching. The C2 is plenty car enough for me!

How tall are you and do you have any reason to put kids in the back seat?
What's more important to you? Looks or driving feel.

I miss the hell out of my 987S Boxster S. That car was WAY more fun to drive than my 997S...but I didn't fit in it well and my kids couldn't ride in it with me.

After owning a 3.2 Carrera and then a 996 for many years, and in an attempt to bridge the gap between my 996 and my wife's SLK320, I bought an '07 Boxster S. Wonderful car and very enjoyable to drive. But it simply wasn't a 911 and ultimately I couldn't live with that and bought my current 997.2 S.

JMO, but in no way do I regret that move, nor do I think the Carrera is less entertaining than the Boxster to drive; I find the reverse to be true. Buying a car like a Porsche is as much, maybe more, an emotional than a logical decision. You have to have the car that "moves" you. For me that's a 911. YMMV.

Well I have both (almost). I like my boxster but if one has to go it's not going to be the carrera. While the handling of the boxster is superb the 997 is no slouch. And playing with the dynamics of the rear engine design is rewarding as you drive.

I have a base 997.1 and it is a great car. Got it in 09 when prices were low. Been tracked a dozen or more times stock. (Well i do have fancy pedals and a fire extinguisher) Its the most enjoyable time i can have in the car legally and the best stress reducer you can get.

And like Kuhan said plenty of car for me and most likely most other drivers.

Go with the 997.

Drive them both and I'll bet you won't need us to make the decision for you. Neither is the better car, they're just different. Mid-engine handling vs. rear-engine handling. Most find that they prefer one over the other.

If you like the Cayman's handling better there's your answer.

I'm 6'2" and the Boxster/Cayman seat movement to the rear is too restrictive.

I've had all 3 and really do miss the Boxster S. It was just more of a toy. For track use, it's a toss up between the Cayman and the Carrera. Cayman is a really tight fit for some. Carrera looks the best to me though.

Depending on build type of the person (long torso?) the Cayman may have more headroom. For the Carrera Coupe when the seat goes back to a reasonable position for legs, the roofline has sloped and my head hits. So it's either sit really close with jammed legs and no head touching roof, or legs proper and head touches. Remedy is either Carerra convertible or Cayman (yes Cayman has more headroom for the same leg position).

You won't regret the 997 but in time you may regret the Cayman. If this is for a longtime purchase, go with the 997. If it's only for two or three years, buy the one you are hot for today. If it doesn't work you can correct later.

Wait another year when the new model comes out and a 997.2 C2S will be in your budget.

I went through this same decision several years ago. The Cayman is a very balanced car and a beautiful drive, but I prefer the classic look of the Carrera and the extra interior space.

You appear to be leaning towards the 997. Not sure why you would want to place a deposit though. I have a C2 that I love, but I also like the Cayman. The back 3/4 view is one of the best. The best advise that someone gave already is for you to spend as much seat time and your answer will come to you.
