Default Looking at a 997 and/ or 997s

I have a 993 and I'm thinking about a 997.

Any issues besides rms or ims? When did the S go to a wider body compared to a stnd 997?

Also, when did 997.2 come out?

Reliability? Thank you for any advice and tips.

The S is not a wide body. The GTS, 4S and 4 are widebodies. The 997.2 came out in MY 2009. The IMS issue gets better after 2006.

My 2009 has been very reliable.

RMS issues persist across the entire run of cars, but it's uncommon and cheap to repair.

IMS issues exist for any 997.1 car (MY05 - MY08). MY06 saw an improvement to the IMS bearing which supposedly reduced the likelihood of problems. I wouldn't be deterred from an '05 car that's otherwise a good fit, but it's a valid concern.

The S is not widebody for any year. The only widebody 997s are the "4" cars (including Targa), the Turbo, the Carrera GTS, and the GT3 RS. I don't think the widebody is as noticeable as it was in earlier generations like the 993. Make sure you can really tell the difference before you decide it's an important factor to you. I have a tough time telling which is which on a debadged car unless the angle is just right.

997.2 began with the 2009 model year. Many changes, new DFI engine, no more IMS.

They're all reliable.

And whatever you buy, you'd better bring it to MSR Cresson!

I've been doing all the research. Posters above are exactly correct. If Basalt Black works, then the one just posted FS by JackQ is an outstanding car at a very good price. It has an amazing assortment of options, which you will rarely find all together...e.g., it is not so common to find full leather and Bose together. I think that car is a great deal...and it is a C2S, so don't have all the excess weight up front...

Good luck with your search.

One thing that seems to be showing up is that with a car (997.1 engines) that is not really driven too hard the IMS and/or RMS issues seem to be cropping up more. It has to do with getting really good oil circulation when driven hard.

in the beginning it was a bit of a talk abot new DFI engines eating too much oil but it looks like new 9a1 engine is way better than old m96/m97 so get a 997.2 (2009+) car if you can.
you also get way better PCM v3.0 with it.

and this is a great excuse to drive it the way it's supposed to be driven as well as the way most of us like to drive anyway...YAY!!

Are you looking to trade your 993 in or keep it? If you're trading, why?

Is the 997.1S wider than the 997.1 (so diff between the 911S and 911) ?

They are wonderful cars. Overall very reliable.
But do yourself a favor, get one that has a CPO warranty.
Do not kid yourself (like I did) that CPO means the car is good
to go. It just means, that, at least you have this insurance to
cover any major repairs. I purchased an 08 targa 4s, had scored
cylinder, just got it back with reman. engine. Would've been 20k in
work out of pocket.

I would also advise you to get a PPI ($200-300) even on the CPO.
At least this way, you have more bargaining power even if a few
things need to be repaired/replaced.

Not getting rid of the 993. I'm looking for more of a daily driver.

My 993 is low...firm ...and loud. I would keep the 997 more street able. That would be until I hit the slippery slope.

After hearing of all the possible issue.... I might lean towards a 09 or get one with a cpo.
