Default 19" tires only last 15k?

My 295/30/19 tires are worn out, and I need to replace them. I was shopping for a replacement from Dunlops to Kumhos, and I saw one brand that gave a warranty up to 50k. Is that possible on our thin tires or is that a misprint?

15,000 miles is about right for the rears - 50,000? If it looks too good to be true - it probably is...

And on the subject of looks - please can you make your avatar pic bigger?

I hope that you realize that if a tire lasts 50k miles in the rear of a 911 it is either (i) not a performance tire or (ii) the car is driven by a grandma for grocery shopping.

Rears usually last 9-15k miles depending on driving style. And 15k is optimistic and very conservative driving.

Are you sure the 50k mile warranty is on a 295/30/19 size? The only way it'll get that is grandma driving to the mailbox and back for the next bazillion years. I've never gotten 50k miles from any passenger tires let alone performance tires.

15k sounds pretty good already.

Agree with the others -- 15K is excellent. With enthusiastic driving it's easy to get much less. It's not because the tires are "thin" but rather it's because they're "soft" (which is good for performance at the expense of longevity).

Another point though -- it sounds from your post like you're considering mixing tires front to rear. Don't. If you're going to change to a different brand or model of tire you need to buy all four. If you're only buying rears you need to match them with the fronts.

Do not get the Kumhos, ive had them on a different car and had many noise and vibration issues with them, and they are notorious for this. It is a low quality tire in terms of manufacturability.

I think the longest lasting tire currently available is the Continental DW as it has a treadwear rating of 330 or so. I would think 20-25k mileage is ideal. It is a high quality tire and priced very cheap relative to the others. It beat out the Michelin PS2 in tire racks test.

Really? I'll admit my experience mostly comes from Race bikes, but tires are everything. Everyones taste is different but if you find a set that feels good, who cares about the tire life.

One question - is it 2 sets of rears to one set of fronts?

I guess I'm a grandma. I've got 16K on my original RE050s with probably another 4-5K left on the rears. For whatever reason, I'm pretty easy on tires and clutches. Maybe it's my smooth driving style... or perhaps the ridiculously low speed limits where I live.

I replaced my rear tires on my 2006 C2 at 16,000KMS (10,000mi) and I drove it like an old lady. The car was hydroplaning in the rain and became scary to drive. There may have been a few thousand kms left on the tires if you drove on dry pavement. Tires were Continentals. My new C2S has Michelin and I'm hoping for a little more longevity with those. Any opinions?

You should see a big improvement in wet handling and wear. Good choice.

I had some tread left in the rear at 12K, but did change it for better wet/rain traction. These tires are NOT meant to last long as they are performance oriented.

LOL I drive my car to the grocery store every weekend. And I probably do drive it like a grandma because the store is so close the oil doesn't reach the operating temp
