Default Passing of an Era: Kodachrome

Sorry to mislead the Rennlist Team into an OT, but I just couldn't let this event be missed.

This is the last Kodachrome image I have and will ever take. I shot it a couple of weeks ago at the Toys For Tots event in the LA area, and then rushed the roll out to Kansas for processing before they shut their Kodachrome processing machine down on 30 December 2010. It was the last plant in the entire world still processing Kodachrome. (There was another place in Switzerland, but they shut down the end of November 2010). This roll was a roll of Kodachrome 25 -- ISO 25, and it was last manufactured several years ago, and had been sitting in my freezer since then. I shot it in my Anniversary Edition Nikon F5 utilizing an AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 lens. I have to admit, digital is a whole lot easier!

Goodbye Kodachrome.

Great shot and one to treasure for many reasons...

On occasion my brother teaches film photography to young people who are growing up in the digital age. They are amazed to learn how film photography works.

Passing of an era... and what an era it was. In the 60s, and on, Kodachrome 25 was the magic slide film.

Edgy01: nice of you to celebrate K's end with a shot of your iconic car.

"Kodachrome - The American Invention of Our World"

it's quite excellent.

...and parked right next to one of the best looking (in my opinion) Ferraris.

Last roll was processed today at Dwayne's photo in Kansas shot by the owner. Kodak stop making the chemicals last year and on schedule Dwayne's used opened the last of theirs a few weeks ago.

Awesome t-shirt for sale...

Geoff (I have no affiliation with Dwayne's Photo) =)

Hey Dan, nice shot and your car is a great subject to shoot too. Soon you'll be saying good by 6 speed hello PDK! LOL......

I've been shooting DLSR now for 4 years and really love it.

Pretty sure it won't be too long before we'll be waxing nostalgic about the last standard transmission being produced. Floppy paddles and digital photography: more convenient, more capable...but utterly soul-less. Kinda like in "Demolition Man" where people have sex sitting ten feet apart with computer devices on their heads.

I don't disagree but that's pretty harsh. Photography (at least the B/W I shot) used to be an art, painting with light, and you only have a few opportunities to get it right. But it seems like digital photography is disproportional mix of art and technological skill. I can see how it would appeal more to the masses since it's easier and if you screw up a shot you know it instantly and can try again (plus you can play around on the computer and make a marginal shot decent). But what do I know, I still use an FM-2 and OM-4 as much as I can (and have a D-200 that I use when I have to).

Very interesting post Dan.

When I think back on all the crap I've learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
Though my lack of education hasn't hurt me much
I can read the writings on the walls

Chorus:
Kodachrome, they give us those nice bright colours
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew when I was single
Brought 'em all together for one night
I know they'd never match my sweet imagination
Everything looks worse in black and white

I shot a lot of 25 in the past. For some events it was like waiting for Christmas to see the returned slides. There was definitely a lot more thought going into the shot.

How do you like the 17-35 f2.8? I went with a 14-24 f2.8 and although a good lens it is limiting.

The 14-24 is just too narrow a range. Have always loved the 17-35 since it replaced the 20-35.

They took our Kodachrome away!
