Default 997 quandary

Brief background - long time Porsche fan, spent too many years away from the marque after selling my 993tt. Returned, wanting to go back to basics, got a mint 3.2 Carrera. Love the little car. But as with all things, we find ourselves wanting more.

In my case, it was 'back' to a 993. Called around, made a ton of inquiries. Today was offered a 2005 997, Seal gray, black, navigation, 44k miles. (A tiny bit more than my 86 911!) 6 speed, 18s.

Car has had one repaint of nose, minor bump in 2006, overall clean. At a Porsche dealership. Apparently has an unresolved battery drain problem. Bottom Line - I was offered the car at 32k, which I felt was a very strong buy.

First, comments on the relative value. Second, if I get the 997, will I still long for the 993 or forget it entirely?! Thanks for any input.

Great price. Search pre-owned cars on Porsche.com and see what other 2005s are going for. Get a CPO if possible. Very much worth the $2k or so.

I had a 1996 993 cab that I absolutely loved. I sold it to purchase a new 2006 cab, after driving a friend's 997. I loved the 997.1, but kind of missed my 993, telling myself I would go back and get a second Porsche, either an 89 3.2 or another 993 (in addition to the 997). Just last Saturday, I went in the opposite direction. I traded my 997.1 for a brand new 997.2, in this case, trading up for a 997.2 S cab on a deal I could not refuse. I'm in love with this car, I feel its a significant upgrade from my 997.1, and no comparison to the 993. No regrets whatsoever. My 997.2 is an outstanding car.

If they would CPO it I would be all over it, but I highly doubt they will. According to the CPO guidlines the repaint will prohibit the CPO. With that said, I think the CPO process is subjective based on the dealer. I recently purchased a CPO'ed 997.1 that had a K40 custom installed. CPO checklist prohibits such aftermarket items but it apparently didn't matter at the Porsche dealership I purchased from.

Also consider service records/# of previous owners, the 05' RMS/IMS issues,. Hers is a decent read on the latter:

Regarding 993 to 997 or vice versa. There are a ton of threads on this both here and probably more on the 993 board. I just went from a 993 to a 997. Like everyone said they are completely different cars. The 997 works for me because I wanted more creature comforts as a daily driver in a four seasons climate. No question I miss the 993 and ideally one would want to own both.

I put 40,000 miles on my 993 in 4 years and every mile was driven like I stole it. I sold the car for $5K less than I paid for it.

I lost that same $5K on the 997 the day I drove it off the dealers lot. With that said I have no regets on making the change but I do have some 993 goodies I stripped from my 993 in the garage in hopes that some day I can have both.

Nokona-where in KS are you?
