High oil pressure

High oil pressure
2006 997.1 C2S: oil pressure tends to stay at or just below 5 bar while under load (even if just cruising in 6th at 75mph) or around 3.5 bar at idle. Manual suggests that 3.5 bar at 5000rpm is the number to strive for and I'd be solidly at 5 bar well below that rpm figure. Do I have high oil pressure? Is this a problem? Is there anything I should do? Take lipitor?

It would seem by posts in the forum, and my my own experience in my "new to me" 06 C2 that "normal" means the needle moves all over. As long as it does not drop to zero you're OK. Mine had "high" pressure for a long time after I got it. It barely dropped down to 2.5 or 3. Under most driving situations it hovers around 4-5bar.
After about 1000 miles of owning the car, it more readily drops down to 3bar at warm idle, but while driving it goes right back up to 4-5bar.

UNtil the oil gets up temp, 200 degrees, my gauge indicates high pressures similar to yours. Once it's warmed up it acts "normal".

For what it is worth I had that problem with my 2007 GT3( besides the RMS issue), it would go to 5 bars at around 2000 RPM. I questioned my dealer and Porsche NA. My dealer was unsure and Porsche NA was more vague. I researched the subject and found that at 3000 RPM the actual oil pressure out the engineer manuals was 6.5-7 bars. We tested that and it was right on. That did not explain, nor was it ever explained why they put a gauge in the car that did not read normal oil pressure. By the way the owners manual for the GT3 said normal pressure was 3.5 to 4 bars. A bar is 14.5 PSI. My 2009 oil pressure gauge reads as per the manual.
I was and still would be concerned except Porsche bought back the GT3 after its fourth RMS ( and lots of time in the shop) High oil pressure can cause damage just as low oil pressure. With low you do not lubricate properly and can over heat by friction metal parts. Excessively high oil pressure can cause seal failure etc. Once it gets above the upper limit of the gauge you have no clue. fortunately these engines are overly strong. By the way on the Cayman and Boxster they solved the problem by not having an oil pressure gauge. In fact on the new one there is not even a pressure sender transmitting info to the computer, only a sensor that alerts the computer if pressure gets too high
