Do your research before considering a 335i.
I have one and I confirm that your are correct!
I've had 2 fuel pumps go bad and one bank of injectors with an exhaust. Over $4,000 of out of warranty work for a 3 year old car (that has 77,000 miles since it's my DD) is just unacceptable!

I know this will be sacrilege here, but my neighbor just bought an Infiniti M56.
He took me for a ride in it, and I was very impressed. Over 400HP V8 - it hauled ***. 7 speed auto that actually blipped the throttle when it down shifted. Interior was on a par with Lexus. Very nice car with nice lines.
I think the 6 cyl. version is well over 300 HP. maybe worth a look if you would consider a Japanese builder.

get an m3 car if you like but it is not a 911 car and will never be. you can test drive shelby, may be you`ll like it. frankly none of real sports cars belongs on a street, I would definitely prefer one of mid-range lexuses for DD car.

you got some cash - try to shop around for used 996 gt3 car. try it at least. you may be surprised.

Here are the contenders: 335i sedan, 535i, 550i, Audi S4. Am I missing anything? I know this is the Porsche 911 board, but what about daily driving automobiles… what do you guys enjoy when its not the horizontally opposed 6 wailing?
Well, your list is pretty much entry Sport Sedans, that non provides 75% of 911 performance. 335 is great sedan, but I don't think it's sporty enough to be 75% of 911, so I really wouldn't consider it. S4 is a great overall car, and has amazing interior, and great power/MPG, but similar to 335 is not sporty enough IMO.

Weren't you a Vette lover? then why not CTS-V? Right up your valley. The only GM/American car I'd consider.

If not, then the options IMO are:

- RS4
- M3
- M5
- Aston Martin Vantage (coupe)

I've personally haven't driven a better Sedan than RS4. It also has one of the best manual trannys. It's a couple of years old, so can be had quite cheap and is very unique! M3/M5 are always on top of the list, so check them out.

Aston is the most stunning of them all, closest to 911 performance, but Coupe (not sure if you have to have a Sedan since you just owned a 911).

I second the choice of M3. It's got decent style and performance, plus the practicality in a coupe or sedan form. Coming from a long line of BMWs, there wouldn't be much in the way of surprises or adjustments for you either.

I know you won't agree, but personally I find all those big German boats to be about as much fun as sitting on a sofa. They've got power, but are just so soft and big and heavy and numb.

IMO for daily driver pleasure the way to go is something like an Rx8 or a Mini. Lots of fun, cheap, no stress.

Mazdaspeed 3 is a great DD and the FWD torque steer is a actually a laugh to play with.

+1

My 09C4S is my daily driver but if it wasn't I would probably go Mini.

Best value is E46 M3 Competition package 05 or 06. Get her for just under $30k, drive it for a couple of years and DEs and sell it back for high $20s... If it had a sole I would have kept it.

Mustang is 1/2 the price and just as fun as a M3, put $10k into it and the M3 can not come close to compete with it.

Do not under estimate the new Mustang, even the interior is very nice.

you can get a GT500 for less than a M3.

The new Mustang 5.0 definitely has some bang for the buck, and the upcoming Boss 302 version appears to be a true enthusiast's car. Definitely check out the M3; it will be the last of the naturally aspirated M3s. New S4 is OK, but overpriced IMO, and still a FWD car attempting to have the handling dynamics of a RWD car by adding a heavy AWD system; better approach to this is to buy a RWD car, again IMO (RS4 gets a pass here because of the stellar motor). RS4 has been out of production for a while; you would have to find a used one in good shape (they are well known to have suspension issues, so be careful). The C63 AMG has a nice motor and decent chassis, but the interior is terribly cheap. I am also a fan of the MINI as others have suggested, but it is quite down on power and practicality compared to the other cars mentioned.

I think the upcoming 1 series M coupe is going to be the next great sports car/sedan to come to market. While we have seen the basic car before in the 135i, it appears that BMW has massaged the chassis not unlike Porsche did with the Spyder, potentially creating a very fun and focused car for enthusiasts.

I second that, if there's enough room. I almost bought a C63 after tracking one at Laguna Seca. Fantastic car, but I don't think a manual is offered...
