One of these days I think someone will have to develop a relatively inexpensive video camera that can cover the front and rear of your car--like a cockpit voice recorder for aircraft. It would tape up to 30 minutes of data and then start over again. If you ever had an incident you would have the proof on the media! Could also be used in court to show your speed if you were legal at 65mph for example and a cop tried to claim you were doing 80.

Your OK.
A car can always be replaced.
If you work with his insurance company - ask for replaced value (including taxes your time, and some aggravation).
If you both are fair - you will reach a number you are comfortable with.
If they balk - threaten them with contact from "your attorney" regarding financial and physcial damages.
If that still doesn't work and you get nowhere and they try to scew you - go to an attorney (but negeotiate $ up front) - otherwise the attorney will scew you more than the insurance company.
