I can't help you with the differences between a Porsche 911 and any BMW--I've never driven a BMW. I have driven Porsches since age 19, and am 55 today. (I never saw the need to compromise with some 'sport sedan' type car.)

You should not be undertaking this search this way. YOU have to go out and test drive a couple of these cars to learn if they feel like you want them to feel. I made the 'mistake' of driving one when I was 19 years old--and have owned one ever since. They are sort of like the opiate of automobiles, if I may coin a phrase.

But if you have a family, want 4 seats and to maintain a certain image in your neighborhood then perhaps you need to not look here. I'm sure the BMW is just fine as they sell millions of them. Many people are quite happy with them apparently.

Decide for yourself. The test drive is the start--or maybe the end.

I just went through a similar comparison. For me, I ended up here with a 2006 C2 and am very happy. the BMWs are fine cars. They really are. But the gearbox, clutch, and steering did not compare to the 911 for me. Especially the newer E46 series. I had an older (1999) M roadster E36 series and it was a VERY special car. I still miss that one. The E46 bumped up the power, but lost some of the road feel vs the E36 series.

I have a 2008 BMW 535 as my daily driver. I have had so many problems with it. It was a great car with good handling, smooth and quiet engine, until all of the problems with the fuel system and turbochargers. It was my first and last BMW. My 911 is a keeper. I would only lease a BMW while under warranty.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like 911 is the right car for you, M3 is a fine machine, and I am sure it'd be more than enough and as fast as you need your car to be! Good luck!

I heard that from family too. But what they don't realize is that after that first drive, I did have to buy it...

I think that part of the issue is that you would tend to choose an M3 or a 911 for different reasons. Clarify your needs and your choice will become obvious....rather than asking others.

Like others have said here, I also tested a new M3 before buying my used 911. I've driven M3's for the last 10+ years, they're great cars. I never had reliability problems with the ones I owned and was very happy with them.

When it was time to change I knew I either wanted another M3 or a 911. I tested both and there was no going back from there. The new M3 was nice, it offered a comfortable ride (something I could never say about my E46 M3), and was a good combination of performance and luxury.

However, the driving feel of the 911 is in a different world. If I'd needed a commuter or a car with 4 seats I'd be driving an M3 today. I didn't need these things and couldn't be happier with the decision I made. The 911 really is in a different class. From the level of finish, to the more exotic looks, to the wonderful sounding engine.

Is there another M3 in my future, maybe if my needs change. If I was buying again today would I buy another 911, no question.

Because you clearly want a porsche if you're asking people to help you rationalize it. If you can afford it and you really love it, just buy it- you'll never be dissapointed (if you love it).
