Opinions will fall in two different camps - high visual entropy or simplicity. Guess where I fall?
Someone I know says that car design converges (in the limit) to the same solution, i.e., at some point all cars will look the same. We know that this interior migrates from the Panamera but in the sports car world the 991 is now approaching the look of MB and AM. I guess that convergence is coming, but I much prefer a simpler design, like the Exige - talk about minimalist.

I actually really like the new interior. The more I see the 991, the more I'm fairly certain I will get one. And I wont be waiting till they work out the bugs The PCM and center dash looks well integrated and it flows nicely.

I fully anticiapted that the new car would be going this route. After reviewing the Panamera and the Cayenne interiors, it was only obvious that the 911 would give way. I am sure I will adjust to it after I see it more often. I do think it will be too many buttons but i prefer it to some type of iDrive.

I actually prefer the 996 interior pictured above with console-delete and minimal buttons. I guess I am weird.
The 991 photos remind me of Aston Martin, Audi and BMW... all nice, but heavy & luxury-oriented cars. I guess that's simply what today's $100k car target market demands. I'm sure the 991 will be fast and impressive, despite its complexity. Hard-core track junkies & simplicity-freaks will be further relegated to the GT3 and used 911 market... which is probably fine from Porsche AG's perspective.

I like both (Adias new avatar..saw that pic on the 997.2 brochure and the 991's interior). The dash on the air-cooled 911's had that special aura..iconic in every right.

It was definitely more comfortable in 996 times since with the cubby and cd storage removed. Your right knee can swing out toward right. Otherwise, nowadays you right leg must stay straight. Long trips are bad that way for some.

Here ya go. Gotta have the proper study material to make your decent critical analyses.
IMO, at least the chunky, "shoved-in-there" effect of the 997.1 PCM/AC/etc is gone. Looks a little more flowing.
Still too many buttons but it's gotta look like a testosterone-poisoned fighter jet to sell, right?
Now they've crossed the line where the bigger much more prominent shifter looks like a HUUUUGE joystick in there. Good for getting a good grip on! Should put some red buttons on it to get full effect. Next version - the shifter might be in the middle of the seat, between the legs where it's supposed to be?
911T interior attached for perspective, Ahhhhhhh..., THOSE were the clean and simple good old days!
LOL. Just having some fun. Kidding around.

It seems there's more room in the 997 because I don't have the same problem with knee room, but you're right, it was definitely an issue in the 996 and one of the reasons I deleted the console.

They probably moved the windows and the side mirrors buttons from the door to the area behind the shifter. If they used one button for each Up/down/left/right instead of a joystick for the mirror, that's 7 extra buttons.

I wonder if all that brightwork in the interior is real aluminum or painted plastic? I was always disappointed that all that silver trim was plastic in the Porsche and was real aluminum in an Audi.
I have been in the Panamera and while the leather is nice I think the plastic on the console where all the buttons is of crappy quality.

I think this is what you're referring to. These are pics of the interior of my old 996. The lower part of the dash center console with the CD holder, storage bin etc was removed and replaced with a carpet piece. I believe the GT3's of that vintage had this "console delete" feature. It also mimics the open area under the dash in the older 911's.
