I purchased the Craftsman mechanical lever arm type torque wrentch and used the Permatex lubricant, at 96 ft/lbs. I found that my torgue readings are consistently 15 lbs under my friends Snapon tool.

Mike in CA,
Where did you get the Optimoly TA?
I've asked my dealer, looked at auto parts stores and did a quick google search and haven't turned anything up.

I went through several craftsman T wrenches before I purchased my snap on a few years ago. The snap on is still going strong and has actually saved me money.

I bought the Optimoly TA from my dealer but it was a long time ago, probably 9 or 10 years. As you can see from the photo I posted it has a Porsche parts sticker and part number ( 000 043 020 00 ) on it although by now the number may no longer be valid. The paste is still referred to specifically in the owners manual of my '09 997.2 so I would think it would be available through Porsche somehow. Be aware that there are different versions of Optimoly paste and that the TA is the recommended one.

Actually, if you type "Optimoly Paste TA" into google you will get quite a few hits. At least I did.

This thread is a first-class example of how helpful Rennlist people can be, and how valuable the information can be. Bravo.

As an aside, information offered on many other topics (by dedicated Rennlist Porsche enthusiasts) is many times wrong, contradictory, or opinion rather than fact. This thread ha been a breath of fresh air.

OK - Just got a note from Pelican that said Porsche doesn't have any Optimoly TA in the USA. They will order it from Germany for another 20%.

I'm going to check out the link amp-993c2 suggested and see what that will cost.

Nah! Just get Permatex " Never Seize." Local auto store = 5 bucks. Great stuff: aluminum. These are wheel lugs not cylinder head studs/bolts. NS could probably be used for both btw.

First, the Permatex product is a blend of aluminum, copper, and graphite. It might be appropriate for the Porsche application which calls for aluminum paste, or it might not. Second, the Permatex is $5 for 1oz (28gm), the Optamoly TA in the link from rickmdz above is about $20 for 3.6oz (100gm), so it's not like the Permatex is a huge bargain.

So as I said earlier, unless you have a degree in metallurgy or know for sure, not "probably", that the two products are exactly equivalent, why not go with the manufacturers recommendation?

Good point Mike. OTOH, we're talking lug bolts here.

I used to like doing things by the book. Was kind of fun. Now, maybe my diet has changed somehow and my brain is less frontal-lobed (executive decision and planning) Now I just get what's "good enough" for less-than-critical applications.
How bad have I degenerated? Not too bad? I still refuse to use a Sears battery maintainer and insist on a CTEK.
