Default Is this normal?

I own a 997.1, 2007 C4S. I drove on a semi long trip 600 miles and noticed that the muffler tips were really black on the driver side vs. the passenger side. is his normal?

Thanks,

John

no, i don't think so. you're running rich on the left bank it looks like. could be an O2 sensor or an exhaust leak perhaps but you'd probably get a warning (?) is the car running rough at all?

that is, unless you were in a very strong crosswind for a long time.

I have a goodly amount of black soot along the bottom of both sets of tail pipes on my S--happens all the time. (And I use a lot of oil--thank you Zuffenhausen). To have one side worse than the other may indicate a problem with the air-oil separator, as well as those other points brought up.

My soot it pretty evenly dispersed. Also, I burn hardly an oil in my 997.1.
In the last 2k miles it hasn't even dropped one bar on the meter.

Sorry Buddy, not a good sign. Hopefully not TOO serious.

My car now appears to be using one quart per 6000 0r 7000 miles and I have some soot on each of the tailpipes.

Would help to see pics. Here's two pics of my 996 Turbo's exhaust tips. Just been using the car for work commute (30 miles one way about 75% freeway) and some errands around town.

The pics don't show it well but the two have nearly identical sooting though it is obvious the sooting is not symetrical around/inside the exhaust tip.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Are you talking a comparison of the left tip and the right tips? I.e. one tip has more soot than the other tip?

Or are you talking uneven coloration on the inside surface of an _individual_ tip? The former is bad. The latter (differences on inside an individual tip) is normal.

Looked at your photos....that's really nothing. I wouldn't worry at all. I get much more.

Thank you. I am having it inspected on Monday but there are no issues with the engine at all. No rough idle or no lights come on at all.

Can't hurt to have the dealer look at it.

Never hurts to have qualified service personnel look. Often they know some tricks that they hear about through Porsche channels.

I worried about this initially w my 06 and I have seen it on numerous others. My wife thinks inspecting tailpipes is ****. Women! As said above, no problem. At 25k miles my engine continues to settle in. Oil consumption has dropped to less than 1 bar in 3k miles. As oil consumption has dropped the difference is barely noticeable. Motor is real strong. Porsche will not touch the engine if it is running well. They will also not tell you what is going on. Hint: see my comment on oil consumption above. Slight difference in tolerances between cylinders that are within spec. They did a workup for me at 2k miles w compression, leak down and borescope. "No problems w motor". Have them note it in your file at Porsche Customer Satisfaction for the record. Then drive it and enjoy it. "Modern metals are hard and there is break in going on for well over 20-25k miles" Paraphrased from Excellence. Drive it hard. It will repay you with many years of fine service and get better over time.

I think I'm past the break in period (50,000 miles) and still using oil. I am considering using a different oil to induce more wear.
