turning off 4wd on a c4s
#2
Rumor is it's possible with the new PDK cars with electronic 4wd by pulling up on the handbrake very slightly.
Obviously not possible on the older visco-mechanical cars.
It would be awesome as a switch in all the cars.

The rumor out there of using the handbrake to fool the system would only apply to the 997.2 cars. The viscose clutch system exists on the 993, 996 and 997 all wheel drive cars--changed with the 997.2 cars.

997.2 is one click ebrake, 997.1 is a different 4WD system and does not disengage without a big big hammer.. LOL.
remember, ONE CLICK on the 997.2... doesnt engage rear e brake at all, just turns on the light on dash and disengages the front axle.

It's perfectly understandable that somebody would want to buy a 4S and have the 4WD 99% of the time, but once in a while go to 2WD drive mode. Maybe just for an autocross, or to be able to powerslide around an empty parking lot.
It would be cool if Porsche would recognize that their cars are for enthusiasts and provide an explicit 2WD mode.

While I can't say I've done extensive testing... I have pulled the ebrake one click on my pdk 4s and had some rwd fun last winter. That being said though, I didn't go overboard for fear of ruining/breaking/damaging the vehicle/property/persons/etc.

We get some genius making this remark every time these threads come up.

You are all correct, in parts. It's like discussing color.
It was great to learn that, Riley. Thanks.
P.S. I bought AWD not because I cant drive rear wheel drive car in the snow 1/3 of each year or more. Thats easy. I bought it because its more fun on the track = the car helps you get out of a sticky situation by using the front wheels to pull too. Providing front wheels still have traction, you are not alone! And one can always use a helping hand.
Maybe thats just me.

Stan - Love the yellow C4S! I also bought a C4S instead of C2S because of the poor weather we get (snow, slush, etc.). I didn't mean (to the OP) to come off badly, just wondering why one would want to disable such a key component of the car. Also, I would be much more concerned about screwing with the electronics, the diffs, etc. Keep in mind, most AWD cars these days are sensitive to things like mismatched tire depth, let alone cutting off half the drive. Just my $0.03.

I think you make a very valid point. I don't have a C4 so I can't check the manual, but is this one-click-on-the-handbrake thing an actual feature of the car or just some kind of bizarre built in failsafe? It's hard to imagine that Porsche really intended for people to be running their C4's around with the front drive disconnected, and it seems possible that if you do, some kind of damage could occur.

Sorry to dig up an old post but has anyone confirmed that the 1 click emergency brake trick does indeed turn off the AWD in a C4S to make it 2 wheel drive or is this just a rumor? Thanks
