I am noticing a "rattling noise" from my exhaust when I am in reverse, and when I am in first gear. The noise is noticeable only at first in either gear.It does not seem to occur every time, and not necessarily only when the engine is cold. My car is a 2008 and I just bought it with only 1400 miles on it from a Porsche dealer. Any ideas? Thanks.

 

Sometimes they have minor cracks in the welded on bands that tie together exhaust components. One may have fractured--although your mileage seems too low for that. Only a mechanic can dig around enough in there to find the source.

 

I had the same issue and the dealer replaced mine under warranty.

 

Similar rattle in PSE can be caused by the resonator flap breaking. I had two PSE resonators replaced under warranty in my C2S with a similar noise.

 

The first question is do you have PSE? PSE (for 997.1 cars) is notorious for having sound issues usually resulting from cracks in the welds.

I'm having my own PSE problems. I've been running my PSE unplugged so I don't have to run it in sport mode to have PSE on. I noticed that at every gear at around 3K RPM, that the exhausht would chirp. Sounded like there were 100 crickets trapped in the muffler. I plugged the PSE clip back in and now it's gone. I'm not sure where all of these sounds are coming from, but when I resolve the issue, I'll be sure to share the info...

 

+1. The hangers had a poor welding job. They had to replace both mufflers....

 

I just had my right PSE replaced under warranty since it was
making a rattling sound between shifts.

Not a big issue and very common. Porsche will take care of it.

 

Sounds familiar...

Had mine for only 6 months when I noticed a tinny rattle when I hit a certain RPM (around 3500). Didn't happen everytime. Seemed to happen more often when the car was cold.

Took it in and the mechanic found the right muffler had a welding that had cracked and therefore was vibrating against other components at a certain engine speed.

Though only the right side muffler had this broken weld, my service rep ordered a new left and a new right side muffler, replacing both under warranty. Great guys. They even let me watch them pull both mufflers out, put the new ones on and eye-ball the tailpipe tilt adjustment myself. I got a chance to really get under my car and look around for a while. Made a bad situation a good learning experience.

my car is 4 months out of warranty and the PSE cracks are driving me crazy. does anyone think that PCNA will help me out anyways with a new set of mufflers?

 

In case you have to buy them I got the mufflers from Sunset for a good price a couple of years ago when I replaced them. Car had extended warranty but dealer said mufflers not included!!!

 

They covered mine.

 

They didn't cover mine under the CPO.

 

If you are out of warranty, and you are suffering from cracks--do not buy new mufflers! It's a waste. Just take them off and have a shop weld up the cracks. The cracks generally have nothing to do with the functionality of the mufflers (to muffle). They are merely the bands encircling the mufflers--and Porsche apparently had chosen too thin a piece of steel for this--they fracture. They can easily be re-welded to be strengthened.

I'm currently suffering from this (I think). Does anyone have an idea how much it costs just to get a shop to weld the cracks? Also, how long does this take? Is it an "outpatient" type of repair, or will I have to leave the car w/ them for a while?

 

Any reasonable muffler shop can handle this job. To gain access I think it's best that the things be removed.

Costs will vary with your location, and with the overhead of the shop. The fancier it is, the more you're going to pay--no surprise there. It's very simple work.
