New Order Questions
#16
If you are ordering rather than selecting from stock, I suggest that you get the (huge) file from Consumer Reports that gives the dealer's prices for every car and every option. It's about $20 as I recall. It's available online.
Make a spreadsheet with the sticker prices and the dealer prices for the car and options that you want (including the codes so there is no mistake.) Then compute the total dealer's price for the exact car you want. Offer the dealer that amount plus a fair 5% profit. Add delivery and negotiate the rest of the non-factory stuff. And that should be that.
Dealers like to work from sticker prices but you are better off -- read Consumer Reports' explanation -- working from the dealer's price. If the dealer insists on using the sticker price, let him but also show him your numbers and the CU figures on which you base it. Then offer whichever number is better.
