Default IS A CARERRA AN "EXOTIC"

I have always wondered this and from what I hear on TV and from people, is that most consider it as such. I for one feel it is, I think you can guage it by how many you really come across on the road per day. I have homes in two very affluent neighborhoods and I can say that I see almost as many Ferarris on the road as Carerras, especially in the Hamptons. Something must be said for that.

I voted yes. When I was young, magazines like Road & Track would classify the 911 as an exotic and that's the image I grew up with. I believe to the majority of the general public, a Porsche Carrera is an exotic.

However, for those of us on this board it may not seem like an exotic. Especially since the 996 and 997 have been massed produced in fairly large numbers.

A Porsche is a mass produced sports car, and not an 'exotic' car. It might be exotic in your mind.

Nope. It is a great car, but it's not an exotic. You'd have to get to GT3 RS and more likely GT2 territory before a 997 can be considered exotic.

My vote is a subjective yes based on what I believe the general public's image is of a Porsche 911 Carrera and using the term exotic car in the non-strict sense. I fully expect the responses on this board to be similar to yours, but we are not the masses. I would expect on any car enthusiast site for the "No" votes to out number the "Yes" votes. But put such a poll on a forum for dogs and cats and the outcome would be more reflective of the general public.

Uh..., IMO? That's kind of an overstatement.

Though it may not be an exotic, please tell us which car is closer to being exotic? Actually there must be a bunch of cars in between if the Carrera is "not even close."

Sorry, your "affluent neighborhoods", inability to spell Carrera(it's on the back and sides of your car) & Ferrari, and leaving your spoiler up will never make your Carrera an exotic.

Simple Carrera, nope. Carrera GT, yes.

Just saw one today, along with Ferraris, Lambos, Astons, and a couple of GT3 RS... What a great day at the Nurburgring... (more to come later)

I'd say a notch below exotic, but certainly not exotic.

An interesting question is whether an Aston Martin would be considered exotic- production numbers are much less but cost is not that much more than a Carrera. I'd say yes to that because the "dollars to practicality" ratio is higher for AM.

PS. There's this key on the far left of your keyboard, about halfway up...

Yeah, but the only problem with that thinking is then you're simply into the issue that the general public doesn't know what "exotic" means in respect to cars. They'll say "look at that exotic car," just like they'll say "yum, that flower smells exotic." They're simply using the word "exotic" and its literal definition, but not in the automotive language sense.

They might think it's some super expensive sports car that will do 200 mph only because they don't know cars, period. "Gee, that thing looks exotic." They know it's a sports car by its shape and maybe have seen one in the movies or something. But that's as far as they can go with it.

In addition, it depends on where one lives as to how the general public reacts to seeing a Porsche (that is, if they even notice in the first place.) Porsches are all over the place in SoCal.
