I am not selling my 997 but am thinking of getting a 993. Its only a probable thought at the moment but since I have never driven a 993 I am just wondering would it be worth the bother of even looking at them.

I mean is the 997 just so much better that a 993 would not offer anything extra. I know they are not comparable cars as such I just want to know do you all think there is any merit in owning a 993 as well as a 997 other than it just being nice.

They are slow cars by comparison. That said, they are very, very fun to drive even slowly. I have one but I also have an AMG as a daily driver. There's a big difference between those two. A 993 and 997 would be a bit redundant, imho. Unless you like to tinker and own older cars for the sake of what they are (as opposed to performance and practicality), having both a 997 and 993 doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

But again, if you have the space and an urge to collect Porsches, then why not.

A counterpoint to Canyon's post.

I'm planning what you are considering in reverse. The 993 and 997 are different enough that I cannot consider one better than the other. The 993 has a connected feel that is lost in most newer cars - though the 997 is really close. It's small with a really short wheelbase and upright windshield which really results in a unique (and I believe) special driving experience. In my opinion, a 993 is not slow as a sub-5 second 0-60 car (171 top speed). And it's built like a tank.

You obviously know the 997, but from the vantage point of a 993 guy, I see them as faster, more comfortable, and just as thrilling in a slightly different way. An awesome car and a better daily than the 993. I want one really bad to go with my 993!

Contrary to what many think, a 993 weighs just as much, if not more, than a 997... If I was going to consider an older 911 I would go further back and pick an early 80s model instead.

That's incorrect. A narrow body 993 (c2) weighs 3060 pounds. A narrow body c2 3.6 997 weighs 3260. Of course, a 997s weighs yet a bit more.

Speaking of references, I like to see the reference about the 993 being a sub 5 sec 0-60 car. The only figures I can find put the non-turbos at low 5s or mid 5s. Mine sure as hell isn't a sub 5 second car

They're different cars, I have both... like them for different reasons and wish I still had my `87 cab. However, the 997 is more the daily driver and I use the 993 for track mostly.

Do you really need yet another car that you won't drive when its wet, cloudy, windy, humid, or very hot?

But why did you say it weighs as much if not or more than a 997?

I'm going to check my manual. You check your 997 manual and we'll compare those figures. Be sure to use either curb or gross weight but let's not mix the two.

My point is that the diff is within a couple of hundred pounds. There's the idea that the 993 is much lighter cause it's smaller, but it's not that much lighter. Anyway...
