If I were to add an air/oil cooled 911 to the garage, it'd probably be a 964 or 87' to 88 911. Then again, an 82, 83 SC would be cool too.

C/D tested the 1995 993 twice. Times: 4.6 and 4.7 seconds to 60. To the original poster - go drive a 993 and let us know what you think. None of these cars are meant for the drag strip, but the 993, which not in 997 territory, is certainly not slow.

Well, if you look at it this way... Wich ever 993 you choose to buy, it will be worth more than your 997 in less than 4 years... That it all.

993 is a blast to drive, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears on curvey roads...

I could only find a C/D test of a 1997 C4S of 4.9. And that's sort of suspect esp with a 4. But no, neither are meant for the drag strip. However with the torque and hp of the 997.2 there's a mountain of difference between the two. And again, when one gets spoiled with modern horsepower the 993 does seem a bit pokey. Anyway, like I said earlier, fun to drive slow because of its tactile feeling with the road.

Nobody had even brought up weight as a factor for the 993 until you claimed that the 993 is the same weight or more than the 997. So it seemed a bit perplexing, that's all.

The C4S is the slowest and heaviest of the 993 variants.

Check out issues 6/94 and 7/96 (long term test) of C/D for the 4.7 and 4.6 times I referenced above. For those interested, the 05 997 3.6 (C2) tested in the 12/04 issue of C/D did 0-60 in 4.3 seconds.

Cheers,
Joe

I realize the 4 is the slowest and heaviest which is why I find C/D to be suspect even with those numbers.

With only tenths of a second differences there are launch variations that have to be taken into account esp wheel spin. Then there's dropping the clutch at 4.5k or from a standing start, etc.. PDK is certainly making the difference with 997.2s.

Anyway, 1/4 and 60 ft ET is the real test (and the 1/4 mph.)

But I still say the 993 feels pokey compared to the newer versions

This article will probably answer all my questions - just saving it here until I get time to read it.

The March 2005 issue of Road&Track had a 997.1 C2S that did 0-60 in 3.9 secs. Most other magazines had low 4 secs. But I wouldn't generally say the 997.1 is a sub 4sec car, nor would I say the 993 is generally a sub 5 sec car.

My strong recommendation would be to go for a Carrera 3.2 ('84 through '89). Totally different feel with no power steering, ABS and has all the characteristic design cues that can be traced back to the original 911 (Fuch's wheels, sharp bazooka like front fender's, round headlight's etc). Other advantages include cheaper running costs and DIY friendliness. In the course of 911 evolution, the 993 is the best iteration of the air-cooled 911's but for a 997 owner, the 3.2 would offer the most contrasting car both in terms of exterior styling (993 has smoothened lines just like the 997) and drive feel. Drive one and you'll know what I am talking about. I own a 997.2 and retraced my steps backwards and got a '86 coupe (with the old school 915 gear box). Best decision I've ever made.

I'd say that article is pretty spot on - except for the mention of 993 cam belts. The 993 uses a cam chain just like other 911 variants.

Default 993

I've just jumped from the pre-vario 993 C2 94' into a 997.1 S and must say they are a totally different animal !!

The 993 was more of an occasion when driven hard, also the smell of hot oil from the breather pipe is wonderful !!

The 997 is a very very good car, and more confidence inspiring - in that you know each time you walk out to it, it's going to deliver time and time again..

I felt as my 993 was approaching 130K that it was becoming a little fragile? Does that make sense to anyone....

When the markets recover and if the wife lets me I would also look to buy into the 993 again.................but only for the daddy............TT

...would it be worth the bother of even looking at them...Alfaguy2
Since you're thinking about it, I think it would be worth your time to test drive one, and see if you like it.

They're smaller, noisier, and more elemental than a 997; a different kind of 911 experience. Power is more than adequate for any street use.

But if I was looking at getting another special interest car, I would go into a different make altogether. Judging from your avatar, you have already done that.

The 993 is a great way to see 911 history and why the 997 is the way it is.
