Well I had an e92 m3 and the shift was far from silky! IMHO the Porsche shift is much better more meat, more feel, more precise and 2nd to 3rd is like a rifle bolt action.

1st to 2nd isn't great at low revs but drive the car smartly and it improves.

I also have the short shift option which adds to the whole experience

I cannot agree with that assessment. A BMW is NOT a race car. An M3 or M5 is just a BMW with some upgraded components. Large HP doesn't make a race car either. See high HP Ford Mustangs for example. Those shift like #*($&.

Yeah, that's ridiculous, I mean an M3 would never win a 24 hour race against a bunch of the best Porsche teams in the world .... oh wait ...
