Default Could not launch control !!

Okay after 7 months of 997.2 ownership, I finally wanted to experience/test launch control this past weekend. Woke up at 5:30 Am drove it to the back roads (took me no more than 15 minutes to get to the back roads from my garage). Oil temp was around 175. Outside temp was 50 F. Then followed the instructions. 1. PSM off. 2. Sport plus mode. 3. Floored the accelerator with left foot on brakes. 3. Engine did not rev past 3 to 4 K.. felt like it was hesitating...then I get a message on the dash that stated transmission is too hot ??? !!!! Am I missing something here.

I recall reading (maybe in Excellence magazine) that, in order to protect the clutches in the PDK, the computer will not allow a launch to occur if the temp in the transmission is too hot. I believe the article stated that it took about 1.5 to 2 minutes for the transmission to cool down appropriately between launches.

I know you were attempting to do your initial launch, but if you had driven to that location in a spirited manner, maybe the transmission was still a little too warm for the computer to allow a launch.

I do not recall having to turn off PSM. I recall pushing the sport plus button, hard on the brakes and stepping on the gas quickly - too slowly and you do not get launch control. Instead you simply overheat the tranny

I think that is the most likely explanation. It was spirited 15 minute drive and right at the end of the drive without any break, I tried to launch control. Let's see what the dealer says. Thank you for all the responses.

I must clarify here. The first six minutes or so after I pulled out of the garage was very casual driving (like I usually do) until oil temp was 175 degree. Then for the next ten minutes did spirited driving. May be that was enough to get the trnasmission over heated

You were probably reving against the slipping clutch...(don't do this again!).
The brake needs to be applied firmly for a moment BEFORE stepping on the gas, revs should build freely with no engine loading prior to releasing the brakes and holding on while the clutch is dropped!

I did apply the brake before I depressed the gas pedal. I don't understand what you are trying say. Can you clarify further please.

WCE is talking about firmly...very hard push on the brake...really press it down. Then you must push the throttle all the way to the floor, quickly, PAST the kick down button....you will feel the button you press under the throttle against the floor. Try it with the car turned off so you know the feeling.

I doubt the PDK was over heated from a 15min spirited drive on public roads.

I am relieved guys. Just came back from a successful launch control. 1. PSM was not turned off (wonder why the car and driver website mentioned to do that). 2. The brakes were depressed all the way down firmly (very hard push) and 3. The throttle was pushed all the way to the floor, quickly, PAST the kick down button. I don't think I did steps two and three correctly last time. Mike and WCE you both nailed it thanks.
There was definite hesitation on my part in step 2 and 3. Maybe that lead to the PDK overheating message on the dash because even today to get to the launch control friendly back road I had to drive 15 minutes. Thank you for all the suggestions and wishes.

Thats the beauty of Puget Sound area interstate on-ramps with commute time metering lights. State installed launch points... if you get there at the right time where the lights are still functioning but the ramp ahead is mostly clear.. ie at the end of rush hour.

Glad to hear you sorted this out. Do you think you just didn't have the brakes on hard enough?

Yes Dan, that was probably the most likely reason. You have to really push it way down.
