The round hub 'sports wheel' is the std on 997.1 S models. As Edgy01 says there are many ways to customize steering wheels with controls, etc.

If it is, it's barely noticeable. I have the std S sport wheel in my S, always thought it was not thick enough. I have the thicker leather steering wheel in the TT and like it much better.

Here's a post I made on another forum in the past re the wheels:

On the 997.1;

Triangular-bag wheel is standard on the non-S, included as part of optional wheels - smooth leather (459), multifunctions (431, XPV, 451, 452, 453), Suncoast sells an alcantara and multifunctional alcantara but I don't have the original option codes.

Circular-bag wheel is standard on the S, optional on the non-S (435) and included as part of optional wheels - smooth leather (460), thicker smooth leather (XPA), GT3 in alcantara, GT3RS in alcantara with yellow centering stripe

On the 997.2;

2009 - same wheels as 997.1 unless ordered with PDK (which then have the 2010 style wheels/airbags).
2010+ 997.2's have the new wheels with the new airbags.

It can also be had in leather on the GT3 as a no-cost option for the few of us who can't stand Alcantara.

All multifunctional wheels are triangular on the 997.1 cars.

I got a loaner PDK Boxster with a gorgeous thick leather wheel with the thumb 'wings'. Much better than my 997.1 std wheel. And it had the round airbag.

Question: do all cars come with the wiring to hook up the multi function wheel?

topspd is correct above.

The smooth leather, circular airbag, thumb-winged 'sport' steering wheel is standard from 2010+ on all Porsche sports car models (and Panamera, I believe). Can be had with multi-function and/or PDK.

Now the optional steering wheel design is the 1970s Mopar-inspired PDK paddle shift wheel.

Not entirely. There is a thread somewhere on swapping in a multifunction wheel for a car that did not have it. So the wiring harness is there but some control modules and other hardware (ring?) in the wheel need to be added as part of the install beyond the wheel itself.. (and then enabled of course).

However, the muli-function usefulness is questionable based on what you may be limited in doing with the controls.

I have my 997 8 months now and I have never used the multi function wheel controls - but then the radio is nearly always switched off so that I can hear the engine.

Thread resurrection:

1) Is it confirmed that the 997.1 sports steering wheel (round wheel hub) is smaller diameter than the 997.1 standard wheel (triangular wheel hub)

2) Were there 2 oem versions of the 997.1 sports steering wheel: Regular vs. thicker

Thanks!

1) As described in the order guide:

Option code 435 Sport Steering Wheel
Three spoke steering wheel with smaller diameter and
contoured rim.

2) Yes - Standard one is:

Option code 460 Leather Sport Str Wheel
3-spoke sport steering wheel in smooth leather

Thicker one is:
Option code XPA 3-Spoke Str Whl-Interior Lthr
Thicker 3-spoke sports steering wheel in smooth leather.
