I'm looking at '06/'07 cars and most have this steering wheel:

But some have this one:

I'm confused - I thought they changed the wheel with the 997.2 update? Why do some older cars have them?

2 different wheel types- triangular airbag one is the "standard" and the round airbag one is the sport. I believe the sport wheel is marginally smaller diameter.

Plus the sport wheel pictured above has the wider portion above the thumbs as opposed to the regular 997 wheel.

There is the standard "triangular" wheel which is standard on the Carrera. The sport wheel is standard on the S and optional on the base model. There is also a thicker sport wheel available and, finally, a triangular multifuntional wheel available on each model.

At first I was going to say that the top one is for countries where they drive on the wrong side of the road and the bottom one for the rest of the world, then I noticed it was referring to the shape of the hub. My '05 base model has the round wheel hub. It's listed on the sticker as an option. Evidently so is the Porsche shield in the middle, my sticker says something about Porsche colored crest in the wheel.
BTW is there any difference in how the car steers with the different wheels? What makes one Sports and the other one non-Sports, other than the whim of the marketing department?

It's all about customizing the car to your needs/wants. Just bring your check book. There are myriad wheels available for the car if you get to know the order guide.

Some folks like triangles and others like circles.
Beyond that, the sports wheel's rim is different, there are 'thumb rest' areas along the 10 and 2 positions on the sports wheels. The triangular standard wheel is uniformly round all the way around the circumference.

Thanks for the replies guys. Not that I have been looking that closely but I haven't seen 997.2s with the triangular wheel so I assumed it was an update with the face-lift. I didn't realize it was an option...
I wish I could afford a PDK...
